Capt'n Mike's Fishing Report
~ARCHIVE~

05/06/16  Lots of good fish still being caught and the bass are still in spawn on the lake.  Capt'n Mike

I fished with Carlos Garza of Midland, and his brother, Victor of Greely, CO on 5-5-16. We
caught 23 bass on Texas rigged blue worms, and shaky head jigs with blue worms.
It was one of those calm days which makes for a tough day of fishing. I like to have as least a
little breeze to help the bite. We really had to work for each bite.

I fished with Jeremy Robertson of Lubbock, Brian Stockholm and Andrew Kuenker of
Indianapolis, IN on 5-3-16. We caught 36 bass on Shaky head jigs with blue worms, and 10"
motor oil worms. It was a great day to be on the lake until the lightning ran us off around 4:30.
We caught a bass on the first two cast of the day, and had one double for the day.

05/03/16   Just go fishing it will be good.  Capt'n Mike

I fished with Chad Werth of Ossineke, Michigan on 5-2-16. We caught 56 bass. We caught
55 on shaky head jigs with blue worms, and one on a jerk bait. We had a light NE wind all
day long. All but one of the bass were Spots.  These were some of the first spotted bass
Chad had caught because they don't have them in Michigan.

I fished with Casey and Dennis Wunderlich, a father and son team. We caught 23 fish on
citrus shad crank baits, shaky head jigs with blue worm, and green pumpkin worms. The best
was a 3 lb. 3 oz. spot on a green pumpkin worm. The wind was out of the northeast to start
the day, but the wind died to nothing, and once again the fishing died to nearly nothing.

I fished this morning from 7 to 11. I caught six bass up to 18 inches on Gulp minnows and a white wacky worm. I stopped because of the wind.

04/28/16  Lake Alan Henry is known for it's big bass, but this may be the best catfish lake I have ever fished.  Capt'n Mike

This Tony Hall from Morton Texas, who presently holds the lake record flathead 55#.

04/25/16  Good fishing,,,several large double digit bass caught this past week, go fishing. Capt'n Mike

Captn Mike

On 4-20-16 and 4-21-16 I fished with Patrick and Lewis Sparkman. We had 2 beautiful days and the fish were biting like crazy. We stopped counting after we caught over 100. Our fish were from 1.5 lbs up to 4 lbs. nothing really big but lots of fast action. We had 1 sad story, I got pulled all over the lake then bushed. I saw this fish it was a monster. Sometimes your a hero and sometimes your a zero.
We have a good week in store, as far as the weather goes. The big girls are finally moving up in large numbers. Our cold fronts and storms push the Florida's back.
May and June offer some of our best fishing, we have pre spawn fish spawning fish and post spawn fish. This is when I catch a lot of my very big fish.
We caught our fish on Sinkos, Shakey Heads, Swim Jigs, and Spinner Baits.
The water temp was 65 degrees to 67 degrees, and after 3 nights of storms, the lake was a little cloudy. The main lake spawn and deep water spawn will be cutting loose. As of writing this report we have 6 days to turn in another ShareLunker. There has been many times in the past that a ShareLunker was caught on the last day of the season. At LAH we get ripped off, because May and June our water finally warms up enough that our Florida's start their major spawning.
The fish that I have seen on beds have been in 2 to 6 ft of water. Now our fish will be spawning in 6 to 15 ft of water. This depends on which end of the lake that you fish on.
Owls are good luck we caught several fish right under this owl's nest.

04/18/16  Fishing is very very good right now ask this bald eagle... Capt'n Mike

Captn Mike

I fished with Darrell Ford on 4/11/16 while the cold front was blowing through it was a tough day.We could only fish where the wind would let us, we caught 33 fish and had 6 over 3lbs.
On 4/14/2016 I fished with John Reynolds and his son, we boated 42 fish, all in all it was good fishing. It took a while us to figure out what the bite was, sometimes the fish would just sit there and hold the bait, a spongy bite. The fish were not real aggressive.
Great news, there was a Sharelunker turned in this week on LAH. Congratulations Bruce, this is your 2nd one. Like I said before, our lake is fishing like it was 10 years ago.
Nathan King and myself were the last 2 people to turn in Share Lunkers in 2007. Our lake has recycled due to fabulous spawns and heavy stocking of FLorida Bass, Thank You TP&W.
A 10lb bass used to turn an eye, but on Alan Henry it is like catching an 8lb bass, just another real nice fish.
I would not be surprised at all that within the next 3 months we have a new State Record Largemouth. This year we have already had 2 new State records on our Spotted Bass over 6 lbs.
Our lake is the best lake in the State of Texas acre per acre, we have the cover, we have the genetics and the food.
My brother and myself know of over 30 fish over 10lbs that have been caught in the past 30 days, that does not include the ones caught that no one is talking about.

04/13/16  First Lunker that has been reported this year,, Bruce Butler 13.13  way to go Bruce.  Capt'n Mike

I fished with Carlos Bills and Roy Blanchard of Lubbock on 4-12-16. We caught 22 fish with
the largest a spot close to 3#. All were caught on blue fleck worms with a chartreuse tail. The
wind was out of the ENE all day, and in the afternoon it lightly rained on us most of the time.
In the afternoon the wind died down, and the fishing died along with the wind.

04/11/16  Lake is sure turning on,,it producing lots of big fish,,weighed in a #54 flathead catfish yesterday.. Capt'n Mike

Captn Mike

On 3-7 I fished with Marty Foust and his friend Grumpy and on the 8th I fished with Michael Stevenson. Both of these people have been long time clients, and very good fishermen. In 2 days of fishing we boated about 140 fish with the biggest going 8.25 lbs. nearly ever time Michael and I get into the boat together one of us will catch a big fish. In the 2 days of fishing we had a lot of fish in the 3 to 4 lb class. I have said it before this year, LAH is fishing like it did 8 years ago.. I don't see how fishing could be any better.
We are catching our fish on Shakey Heads and Sinkos and EZ Swim Jigs. We are fixing to have a wave of full blown spawning fish!!
Water temp is in the mid 60's and the full Moon is coming. Our lake is kicking out 10 and 12 lbs bass daily.
Our fish will not spawn until after June. Call us and book your trips.

I fished from noon until 4:30, water temp 61. I caught 12 bass with the big spot being 18 inches. Best trip since last year. They were all caught on Gulp minnows in shallow water.

William Ronald Bertrand

I fished with Lewis Senter and Joe Ortiz of Plainview on 4-6-16. We caught 15 fish on worms,
blue fleck of course, with a good north wind blowing most of the day. Later in the day the
wind completely quit, and so did the bass.

04/04/16  This should be a great week of fishing with warm weather on the way, it should happen.  Capt'n Mike

I fished with John Mahaney on 3-31-16 on a very calm day which made for a very hard day of
fishing. I always like a little wind when I fish Alan Henry. A little wind seems to make for better
fishing. We caught 23 bass on cranks, shaky heads, and blue fleck Texas rigged worms.

Hey Mike, I fished with a buddy of mine on March 25th & 26th. We had a good time on the lake and at the lodge! On the 25th we battled the wind all day and caught a few small Spots but no Blacks. We fished under lights that evening with jigs tipped with minnows and caught some nice slab crappie! On the 26th , we had a much better day and no wind. We caught several nice Spots but still no Blacks. However we did see a lot of buck bass up shallow in pockets . I think the good fishing has yet to come. We found water temps from 55 to 60 pending on what part of lake we fished. All of our fish were suspended 15 to 25 ft. Lake looks great and has plenty of water we just need some warmer weather! Thank you for the hospitality and until next time, "Tight Lines Everyone"!

04/02/16  Three 11#s and one over 10# Black Bass were caught today in a bass tournament on Lake Alan Henry,,,It is starting.. Capt'n Mike

Captn Mike
I fished with Bart Gotez and his friend Paul 3-31-16, we had a great day. We boated 45 fish, these guys were very good fishermen.
They were quick learners and we had a great day. They fish LAH all the time.
The water temp was 60 degrees and we caught our fish on Shaky Heads and Sinko's
can't wait to fish with these guys again.
Our fish are starting to go into spawn, there are some large fish already on beds.
Congratulations to a life long friend of the family Lance Gilliland he caught his all time best, a heavy 12 lbs, WAY TO GO LANCE!!!
Also, my son that lives on LBJ was fishing with Gavon Pool, our youngest grandson, today Gavon caught a 6.5 lb bass. The apple doesn't fall from the tree in the Pool family.
Fishing is great we have spawning fish and pre spawn fish. We have not had a major wave yet but it is coming on the full moon.
I have openings for April, give us a call and let's go catching!

03/31/16   Bass are hit and miss,,crappie afterdark on lights.  Capt'n Mike

Captn Mike

March 22, 2016 I fished with Scott Warren under very bad conditions, the wind blew 25 to 50 mph. We could not fish where I wanted to so I had to fish where the wind would let me, that's the beauty about LAH. In West Texas the wind always blows and most of time the wind is your friend. Today the wind was our enemy. We had a very good day even under those conditions. We boated 28 fish and lost as many as we caught because we couldn't feel our bites until it was to late. Scott is one of my repeat client and a very good fisherman. The water temp was 58 to 60 degrees a week ago, now it has fallen back to 55 to 56 degrees because of the cold fronts and the very windy conditions, it is turning the thermocline over. Fishing is still great.
We caught our fish on EZ Swim Jigs and Shaky Heads.

I fished with Reese McBroom on 3-25-16 on a very windy day. We caught 13 bass on crank
baits and shaky head jigs with blue worm. Two bass were caught one cranks, and the rest on
the shaky head. We caught some close to 18 inch spots that really put up a good battle.

I fished with Michael Haines and Jimmy Saucier of Amarillo on 3-19-16. We caught 25 fish

head jigs with the largest going 3 lbs. They fished with me about 5 years ago, and Bradley
caught a 9 lb. 9oz. blue cat on a spinner bait. We had a great day on the water.

I fished part of a day on 3-17-16 with Dr. Howard Beck and his son Cade. We caught 8 fish
on crank baits and shaky heads and we caught lots of trees.

these following caught by Doug Hunt

I fished with Calvin Garrard and his 2 sons, Erin 10 yrs and Cowboy 12 yrs on 3-17-2016. We had a great day, these children were a joy to be around. Calvin and I did not fish this trip, it was for the boys. We didn't have time to fish because we were fishing the large bass minnows for the kids. The boys caught 28 fish with several going 3 lbs. It was a blast.

On the 19th I fished with Shannon Crenshaw and his 17 yr old son. Post cold front 29 degrees when we started and we had another great day. I didn't think we would catch half of what we caught. We put 38 fish in the boat and 7 over 3 lbs in a North wind. We caught all of our fish on Sink O's. The fishing at LAH is fantastic. We did not catch little fish but a lot of fish from 1.5 lbs to 4 lbs and 1 sad story. Shannon lost a giant that took him in the trees and politely sawed him off.

03/14/16  Time to do some early fishing no spawn yet but good early fishing.  Capt'n Mike

Captn Mike,
I fished with Conner Scrivner on 3-12-16. Conner is a Texas Tech student, and has his own boat, has been to LAH 8 times. In that time the most fish that he caught was 4 in one day. He just needed some lessons on where, what, and when. Today we boated 42 fish and had 7 over 18", I know that they are not big but we had a lot of chunky fish.
He was very pleasant to fish with and learned very quickly. Look forward to fishing with him in April.
We caught our fish on Jigs and Sink O's. It was a great day lots of action and very good company.

03/12/16  Spring Break fishing should be good this year.  Capt'n Mike

Captn Mike
I fished with James Bishop from Odessa, TX on the 9th and then I fished with Patrick Sparkman from Pecos TX on the 10th. The fishing is absolutely great in 2 days of fishing we caught way over 100 fish. When you lose count of how many you have caught you have had a great day. These people were great fun to be around and took everything at an easy stride.
The magnum spots are plentiful. The spots are already going into spawn in 5 to 15 ft of water..
The blacks are staged and getting ready to spawn. The main lake water temp is 55 to 56 degrees, this is pre spawn temperature. When the water temp hits 65 degrees and on our full moons, the Floridas will start their spawn.
I am catching my big fish in 20 to 25 ft of water. My biggest fish this week was heavy 6.
We are catching our fish on Jerk baits, Shaky Heads and Swim Jigs.If you want a really Big fish, fish a 10" Power Worm.
On a scale from 1 to 10 fishing is a 10, and will stay this way for the next 4 months.

03/07/16  Things are sure warming up,,,still fish being caught.  May be early this year.  Capt'n Mike

Here is a picture of my 10.06 pound girl that I caught during the February Jackpot Bass Club tourney. My first over 10 pounds! I love fishing Alan Henry!!!!!!

Tom Salisbury

03/03/16  Well this warm weather is having a good effect on the fish, quite a bit of action.  Capt'n Mike

Captn Mike,

Fishing at Lake Alan Henry is great. Our fish are already going into pre spawn, main lake water temp is already above 55 degrees. On the west end of the lake in the late afternoon it is in the 60's.
We are going to have a spawn in March this year and these fish will be some of the larger fish. Our full moon will be around the 20th.
The fish are going to move up quickly. They are already shallow from 2 ft to 20 ft.
Since last fall I have seen the quality of our fish double in size, after we were 19ft low and the lake filled up and went over the spillway, it took a long time for the fish to settle in. All the soured grass and vegetation is gone, but one good thing is all the tumble weeds and all the cover that grew up during the drought turned our lake into a jungle (like we needed more cover)
There has only been 1 Share Lunker turned in this year. This is going to be an amazing year for LAH.
We will be turning in Share Lunkers this year, if not a new state record on blacks. The spot state record has been broken 2x this year.
Our perch and brim have come back in great abundance. This creates a shallow water bite.
I will be posting reports 1 time a week. You can also find my postings on Facebook, my sponsors are requiring me to do this.
I'm very very excited about the fishing this year. I have been keeping up with the weigh in at the tournaments. For 4 years it has been if you had 10lbs you would get a check, now you need 20lbs to win. There has been 10lb fish weighted in at most of the tournaments and that was in Feb.
Our fish are gaining weight big time. If you want a big fish, fish big baits.
We're catching our fish on square bills, swim baits and swim jigs. If you want numbers go to the shakey head and jerk baits are doing very well.

Chris Sallee caught these off white crank baits in 55  degrees. We caught nine total from 1pm -6pm in twenty mile wind.   First day out this year!!!

02/22/16  Everyone is catching something, mostly spots but a few blacks,,,get the boat out.  Capt'n Mike

Fished all day Saturday and the water temp rose to 57-58 degrees. Tried Gobbler and Little Grape, then the main lake stretch East of the dock all the way to the hard right turn near Little Grape. We tried spinnerbaits, crankbaits, worms, red eye shads and even some shaky heads. Nothing seem to be as productive as a white jerkbait in shallow water. We could see the fish hit it most of the time, which is my favorite way to fish. Biggest fish was a 3 1/2 spot on a jerkbait in about 2 ft of water in the verry back of a cove.

02/18/16  Some real good early fishing.  Capt'n Mike

I fished with Reese McBroom on 2-17-16. We caught 22 bass with Reese catch a 9 lb. 1 oz.
bass. He caught it on a shad colored Bomber crank bait. We caught about half of the bass on
the crank bait, and the other half on a shaky head jig with a blue fleck worm. Some of the
other bass were good bass that really put up a good fight. We found the water temperature to
be 50 to 53 degrees, and we found the bass in some of the warmest water up the creeks.

18 bass on shaky head jigs with blue fleck worms, and a couple of bass on shad colored

degree water.
