08/22/10  Steve Pickens and Jim Blount found the catfish this weekend with this 16.05# blue being the biggest.  Capt'n Mike

08/14/10  Good to see  some nice bass caught.   Capt'n Mike

Fished 8/13/2010 and had a great day at the lake. Fish didn't turn on until around 1100. Caught 19 total with this one weighing in at 10.02 lbs. Had to fish deep and painstakingly slow. All fish were caught in 25-38 feet of water.

08/05/10   Went swimming today 100* it was great, fishing is slow slow.  Capt'n Mike

Capt'n Mike,

I fished with Reese McBroom and and brother, Boyd, on 8-3-10, and
the fishing was really tough. We caught 5 bass up to 3 lbs. on 7 and
10 inch worms. We caught the bass from 15 feet to 25 feet deep.

I dropped a thermometer in the water down to 40 feet. The surface
temperature was 88 degrees and only dropped to 68 degrees at 40
feet. This means the bass can be from the top to around 40 feet
deep. I think this is why the bass are so hard to catch at this
time. All the new rain water mixed the temperature to where there is
not a thermocline since the big rain.

07/27/10  The lake is full and beautiful.   Capt'n Mike

Capt'n Mike,

I night fished with Jeremy Robertson and Bill Glass on the night
beginning 7-25-10. We caught 14 bass with the largest going 4 lbs. 3
ozs. We caught 3 bass 4 lbs. or larger with 3 going 3 lbs. or
larger. This was 6 of the 14 bass going over 3 lbs. Of course, we
were looking for a really large bass, but we could not find her.

The moon looked really full, and we only had a light breeze. It was
a great night to be on the water with two really good bass
fishermen. We had a fun time.

I’m Dean Bentley that Norman mentions on your report.  Spent all day on the water in his boat and only caught a few smallish spotted bass.  I’m not blaming, I had a wonderful time as did my two friends. Norman tried very hard to find the fish, but it just wasn’t the day for it. God Bless Him.

The good news is, my mother and I caught a boatload of nice crappie and largemouth from the fishing docks with minnows and shad (netted in the lake – Thanks, Greg from Lubbock).  I was the lucky winner of the night with an 8lb 6oz Largemouth on shad down low near the bottom at about 2:00 AM.

I am looking forward to coming back and fishing some of the beautiful coastline later on with some buddies in their boat.

Thanks,

Dean Bentley

Albuquerque, New Mexico

07/23/10  The Lake Is fully open,,,,, about time.  Capt'n Mike

Capt'n Mike,

I night fished with Carl Edgar on 7-23-10, and we caught 14 bass up
to 3 lbs on plastic worms. We caught fish under an almost full moon,
but we could not find the bigger bass.

Capt'n Mike,

I fished with Dean Bentley, Todd and Camie, on Saturday, 7-17-10,
and we caught only 2 bass all day long. This was the toughest day I
have had this year. We fished shallow, and we fished deep without
much luck. The bass are not where they were before the rain.

I fished with Junior Hernandez and John Swift on Wednesday, 7-21-10,
and we put only 5 bass in the boat. But, we had a 7 lb. 6 oz. bass
and a 4 lb. 6 oz. bass which made for a good day. We caught the fish
on plastic worms.

With all the water that has run through the lake, it has made the
bass very hard to find. They seem to be very scattered, and you have
to find a sweet (lucky) spot to catch fish.

07/19/10   Hot weather means slow fishing but not for Jr. Nava.  Capt'n Mike

These two were caught 7 10 10 in about thirty two foot of water three minutes apart on a soft plastic 9-4 and a 8=8

Jr. Nava

Capt'n Mike,

I fished with Carl Edgar of Brownfield on 7-17-10 on a very tough
day of fishing. This was one of the hardest days that I have seen in
a long time. There was a tournament going on Saturday, and the
winner had a little over 6 lbs. total of bass. Carl caught 5 bass on
blue plastic worms.

I try to tell of the bad days as well as the good days. I had rather
tell you of only the good days, but even guides can have a bad day.
Thank goodness it doesn't happen very often.

07/16/10  Great time to come to lake no one here,  the lake is open from the boat ramp to the dam and beyond,  Lubbock may open the rest of the lake as early as tomorrow.  Capt'n Mike

PS the lake is in good shape no oil

Capt'n Mike,

I fished with Jan and Charlie McKaskie on 7-14-10. We could only
fish toward the dam because of the oil spill way up river. The lake
is still really full, and the fishing seems to be tough. But, we
managed to put 13 bass in the boat with the largest going an even 5
lbs. We caught them all on blue worms. We tried other color worms,
but only the blue ones worked. Maybe next week the rest of the lake
will be open. Water temperature was about 81 degrees.

07/06/10 This is what I know,  there was a tremendous flood at Grassland and Draw the headwaters to the lake, the flood washed out some oil pipelines,  creating an oil spill.   I was told by a reliable source that it was not much but this is second hand.  The TCEQ was the one that closed the lake and they will be the one who decides when it opens again.  I will keep you informed.  Capt'n Mike  Keep you fingers crossed!!!

07/01/10   We have had some rain but not a bunch,  looks like the huraicane will go south of us and give us a nice 4th.  Capt'n Mike

Capt'n Mike,

I took Louise and Bob Anderson, and their Grandchildren, Jordan and
Zack, for a tour of the lake on 6-28-10. This was Monday when it
rained and rained until around 1 p.m., but we finally got on the
water. These are some of the things we saw as we went around the
lake.

We also did some perch fishing which turned into Zack liking to
catch turtles. He had rather catch a turtle than a fish, so, I
called him "The Great Turtle Fisherman".

If you would like at tour of the lake call 806-792-9220.

06/27/10  Full moon sure make night fishing better,  just ask Clayton.   Capt'n Mike

I fished with my brother, Boyd, on the night of 6-25-10. We caught
28 bass with the largest going 10 lbs. 11 ozs. We had about 5 or 6
bass going 3 lbs. or better. The full moon really helped, and the
fish were biting most of the night. We caught most of the bass on 10
inch plastic worms.

06/20/10  Sure has been hot,  worming weather.  Capt'n Mike

Capt'n Mike,

I fished with Ray and Alexander Holguin from Las Cruces, NM on
Saturday, 6-19-10. We caught 11 bass on a 4 hour trip with Alex
catching the largest that weighted 3 lbs. 1 oz. We caught the fish
on worms. The water temp was 83 to 85 degrees. We had a great time
on the water.

I am going to start night fishing this next week as the moon gives a
good light to fish by.

Mike, I fished with my grandson 15th, 16th, and we had a good time catching and losing fish in the 3 to 4 pound range. My grandson had two on one lure, the biggest was 6 to 7 pounds, but of course he got off.  He eventually caught his largest bass ever, at 3 pounds and 7 ounces. Am enclosing a picture of two that I caught on topwater the 16th. The big one was 9 pounds and 15 ounces, and the smaller was 3 pounds and 14 ounces.
Thanks,
Ron Love

06/16/10   What a lake still producing in the middle of June.  Capt'n Mike

Capt'n Mike,

I fished with Jane and Larry Foster of Midland on 6-16-10. It was a
very windy day, and the fish didn't want to bite. We took a 6 hour
trip, and caught 9 bass with the largest going about 2 1/2 pounds.
It was a tough day with all that wind. That afternoon I fished for a
little while, and caught 3 more up to 3 lbs.

I am getting ready to start night fishing. I am waiting for the
bright moonshine to start so we can see what we are doing. I love
the cool of the night to do my summer fishing.

Hello Mike:  My nephew caught this 8.40lb largemouth bass while fishing at Alan Henry last sunday,  It was the biggest fish he has ever caught.  It was really a lot of fun when we got her in the boat.  then we took about five pictures of her and my nephew released her back into the lake and said and I quote  GO BACK AND GROW UP. He caught it on a senko in about 10 feet of water  Thanks for all you do for the fishermen who come to Alan henry in hopes of catching a fish like this.   Larry

06/15/10  The lake is about *80 over all, fish in the early morning and late afternoons is best.  Capt'n Mike

06/11/10   For June fishing this lake is just pretty good.  Capt'n Mike

Capt'n Mike,

I fished with Hose Vasquez and George Reyes of Lovington, NM. They
had never fished worms before. We spent the four hour trip learning
to fish worms. We caught 12 fish up to 3 lbs. Hose and George
learned fast, and they both caught fish. We did tease Hose about
being a gar fisherman because he caught about a 3 1/2 foot gar on a
plastic worm.

06/09/10  Sure is time to go to the lake and the fishing is not half bad for the hear we are having.  Capt'n Mike

Just reading the catch and release statement and I don't believe that many anglers are keeping fish! I wonder about the impact of bed fishing on this lake! I have read numerous reports by biologists about this subject that say it has no impact. I know that the pressure on this lake by people scouring the shallows is incredible. I'll wager if a fish is at all visible it gets caught. How many of these fish are displaced due to tournaments or just never being returned to their beds? There has certainly been a change and I am not seeing as many fish and neither are lots of folks. I know on some lakes they rope off creek areas to keep spawning flats inaccessable. Just a theory, but I do believe everything impacts the lake to some degree!

Mike, just wanted to share a picture of a nice fish caught on the lake over the weekend. This is a 8.9 lb fish caught on a white plastic minnow. I fished with a good buddy of mine and enjoyed seeing this fish landed in the boat. We always practice catch and release in hope others can enjoy the same fish later to come. Thanks for your efforts in hopes of keeping this lake alive! -NG

Got out on the water Friday afternoon around 6 and made a night of it.  We ended up catching around 35 crappie, only 15 were keepers.  They were caught under a green light.  Anywhere from 4-10 feet of water.  Some of the fish still had eggs. chris

05/22/10  Reports of another 9# and a #7 came in this week.  Capt'n Mike

in response to Dave's email

I'm retired and get to enjoy fishing during the week. I feel the entry fee is very modest, $45 for a year. The fishermen I have encountered are very polite and I believe they release most of their fish.
Most of the rich people I know studied hard when they were in school, worked harder than others and made good decisions

Capt'n Mike,

I fished with Earnest and Mark Wagner on 5-21-10. From about 7:30
a.m. to noon, we caught 8 bass on worms. The bass really turned off
around 10:00 a.m., and we really had a hard time getting the fish to
bite.

05/19/10  They are still in spawn,  most everyone catching something, time to go fishing folks.   Capt'n Mike

I remember when O.H. Ivey was in the news for what a great fishery it was.  After the lake matured you did not hear so much until this year with all the share lunkers that were caught.  That is what has happened to Alan Henry.  The lake has matured which means bigger fish are harder to come by.  Everyone is a great fisherman when the catching is easy, now that is difficult everyone needs an excuse as to why they are not doing so well at the lake.

With all the structure and the depth of the lake, the big ones are still there.  Promoting and posting that they are all gone is just non-sense.  I will agree that there are many small fish in the lake but until the TP&W will do something to manipulate the carrying capacity (replace many small fish with fewer larger fish) nothing is going to change at the lake.  It is just human nature to take the "one that did not get away" home for bragging rights.

Lake Alan Henry is a rich mans lake.  If you don't believe me just look at the shoreline.  Then look at the receipt to get past the gate.  That is what the powers to be wanted and that is what they got.  Nothing will change if it is going to take a dime away from their pockets.  The bottom line is, there are too many tourneys at the lake year end and year out and no one is going to stop them because of the $ generated and gladly deposited by the City.

There are many reasons why the numbers of large fish are not being reported.  The list could go on and on.  Instead of always posting the doom and gloom of small fish, after all 1 fish in the boat is better than 2 in the bush no matter the size on a tough day, I would like to see postings promoting safe boating, obeying lake rules (No wake means No wake), conservation of our resource, etc.  I miss the days of old when you could go to the lake and enjoy the outing without someone blowing past you in a no wake zone just to beat you to the "Honey Hole" 50 yards in front of your own boat and site fisherman are the worst.  Lake Alan Henry is a good fishery with fishermen who choose to use poor boater etiquette because they do not care about you or the lake.  It is time for everyone, both fishermen and recreational users, to be good stewards of the lake to preserve and protect the natural resource that we have.  Once that happens, it is amazing how nature will take care of itself.

I support catch and release and practice it regularly.  But I do not dis a man for keeping what he can use and releasing the rest.  No matter what the size that is kept.  For all I know he and his family may need the meat and his trips to the lake are few and far between.

Just food for thought.  Rewrite in your own words or do nothing but I appreciate the opportunity to email you.

Dave

My neighbor and I had a great day yesterday in Big Grape. We caught approximately 30 bass from 7:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. on a variety of artificials in about 6 foot of water. Water temperature -  69-70 degrees. We had a couple of big ones break off before we got them in the boat. I also noticed several recent bass hatches. We released every fish.

             Just a little more experience

Just reading the catch and release statement and I don't believe that many anglers are keeping fish! I wonder about the impact of bed fishing on this lake! I have read numerous reports by biologists about this subject that say it has no impact. I know that the pressure on this lake by people scouring the shallows is incredible. Just a theory, but I do believe everything impacts the lake to some degree!

05/16/10  Everyone caught a lot of fish yesterday and today looks great.  The following is something to think about, even though I still think the big ones are there but spawning deep and smarter.   Capt'n Mike

Mike, well. Looks like the golden days are gone for BIG fish. Wish we could have done more to preserve. Cant say you didn’t try, you did. I guess that’s just the way it goes, unfortunately. This is a post from 2005,

5 years ago….. bummer. Still like the lake… and your website…

I think the following letter has some real merit.  I wished the city of Lubbock who controls the lake would make catch and release on Bass mandantory.  If you're hangin em on your wall you should hang your head in shame and if you're eating them, try catfish or crappie, much better.  Capt'n Mike

Miike, I have spoke with you a few times over the last few years regarding catch and release. And glad to see comments being made on your site!! But, Is the any foresight in the future to make AH a catch and release only reservoir for bass? Reason being is I now how much I preach catch and release to my family , friends and others and still  some of them seem to forget It all when they catch a descent fish and are still keeping 6, 7, 9, 12lb plus fish out of AH – those are just the 3 this spring that 3 people I know and 2 of them I fished with when they caught them. They keep them because they say fiberglass just aint the real thing and they think cause they keep one fish it aint going to matter. We’ll if you look at 150+- boat trailers on the ramp every sat/sun and almost that many other days of the week you can bet a few of those every day are keeping fish. There aint going to be near the quality of fish in 3,4,5 yrs compared to 2,3 years ago. I watched this happen with the stripers at Elephant Butte hear in N.M. Guides started popping up left and right, keeping 2,3,4,5 fish around the  15-40lb class, etc. Now, 4 years later your lucky to see a 20,30-40lber come out one or more times a yr.  I just wonder if it is possible to put a rule like that into affect either through the game dept, petitions or parks and rec , etc. Maybe you know or have a answer? Maybe I just need to be quiet and mind my own business, but I just hate to see a great lake with great potential go to waste. Thanks again as always for listening. Kevin

Capt'n Mike,

Capt'n Mike,

Lake Alan Henry is still the bomb! I just pulled this 10.54 lb momma out for a date at 10PM on Sunday night after the tournament guys went home. It was an awesome fight, the biggest bass of my lifetime, and a great experience. She was hungry for a pumpkin seed and green worm so I took her out for dinner then sent her back home to her babies.

04/27/10  What ever the excuse,  you use,  wind is still, sun is high, fish are biting and it is time to go fishing folks.  Capt'n Mike

04/24/10  The Crappie are about to spawn too.  Capt'n MIke

Capt'n Mike,

I fished with Bill Glass on 4-21-10, and we caught 13 fish in the
muddy water. The only problem we had were catching fish with any
size. Maybe next time.

Capt'n Mike,

Me and Tim Dickenson caught these 28 crappie on the 21st from 4pm to 6pm. The water we were fishing in warmed up to 70 degrees and seemed to turn the fish on. Some of the females we cleaned were ready to spawn and some were getting close. I would like to thank Jess, Lightning and Beckie for turning us on to this spot. All together we cleaned a total of 48 crappie that day.

Capt'n Mike,

I fished with my brother, Boyd, all the week of April 12th thru the
16th.

On Monday we caught 21 bass on senkos and super hogs with the
largest we put in the boat at 3 lbs. 7ozs.

On Tuesday we caught 19 bass with the largest going 3 lbs. 6 ozs.,
and we had 4 to 6 bass 3 lbs or better.

On Wednesday we caught 10 bass before the lightning ran us off the
lake. This is when the rain started. The largest went 3 lbs.

On Thursday we fished 1/2 a day and caught 12, and it rained and
rained and rained.

On Friday we fished for about 4 hours, and we caught only 5 bass.
This is the day the mud really started coming into the lake, and it
rained and rained and rained.

My brother and I had a good week spending time together whether we
were fishing or playing gin rummy.

04/16/10  Coffee shop news this morning is that David Fulton caught an 11# bass yesterday.  Capt'n Mike

04/15/10  They are starting to bed.   By the way I bought a class 3 scale that is certified by the State of Texas Agriculture Dept.  So if you have a record fish and I mean a bass over 10#, I will weigh it at Lake Alan Henry Lodges, but do not wake me up in the middle of the night to do it ( have a little respect}.  The scale cost right at $700, I bought it so fishermen can have an accurate weight on their fish.  If you weigh a fish a donation to help off set the cost would be nice.  I think this may keep some people from taking the big one's home.  I will also take your picture and post it on the fishing report.   Please, especially during spawn and the rest of the year practice Catch and Release.   Capt'n Mike

I caught this 9lb bedding fish on Sunday April 11. The beds are far

04/03/10  Caught today by Jerry Andrus, a 2.4 # black crappie.  Capt'n Mike

04/02/10  The action is picking up on a daily basis, the bass are staging right now, Jerk baits may be it, bubble gum color, something that will sink real slow.   Capt'n  Mike

Action at the dock is heating up! Fished the crappie dock 3/30, not much action during the day, but near sundown the bass and crappie started biting pretty good. Caught this 5 pounder and several more bass, both largemouth and spotted, including some nice 2 and 3 pounders.
Crappie bite was good also most were smaller, but caught a few nice keepers.

03/30/10  Ready Set Go, it should be good.  Capt'n Mike

Doug caught some really nice crappie while we were bass fishing.

Capt'n Mike,

been spoiled in the last few weeks, but the fishing today was as
hard at it gets.

Capt'n Mike,

Bill Glass and I fished on 3-18-10 with us catching 11 bass. When we
started fishing the fog was some of the worst that I have ever seen.
The largest went 10 lbs. 2 ozs., and the second largest went 7 lbs.
4 ozs. Four other bass went 3 lbs. or better. We caught them all on
crankbaits.

03/16/10  Rained all day yesterday, just when the fishing was getting better, it should recover by weekend.  The warm days are helping a lot.  Capt'n Mike

Capt'n Mike,

I fished with 4 year old Nate and his dad, Lewis, from Midland on
Saturday, 3-13-10, and we caught 8 bass on crankbaits. I've never
seen a 4 year old cast as well as Nate. His dad has spent a lot of
time teaching him to fish. This was great to see. As you can see, by
the end of the day, Nate did not mind holding his own fish.

By the way, the big one got away. I hooked a very large bass on a
crankbait just before sundown, and it finally just spit the bait
back at us before we even got to see her. I whined about it for a
long while. But, that's the way it goes. If you lose one, it's aways
the big one that gets away.

I went out on the lake by myself on March 12th, basically for the first time to ever fish the lake when I wasn’t sight fishing.  Water temp was 44* that morning when I left the ramp, but found 49* by 10am and started catching fish.  Caught 9 fish, all on crankbaits in 6-10 feet of water.  Biggest fish was 4lbs.  Water warmed to 56.5 by the end of the day in the back of the creek that I was fishing.  All but 1 of my fish were caught in dirtier water.  Couldn’t get the fish to bite in the clear water.

Capt'n Mike,

My brother, Boyd and I fished on 3-09-10, and we caught 10 bass with

down, but we were able to find 53.5 degree water. We had one other
bass over 4 lbs., and others over 3 lbs.

Thanks

02/20/10  Looks like the weather is warming a little it need to a lot.  Capt'n Mike

Fished Fri. the 19th.  Got 4 bites and caught 2: one on a jig in gobbler and one on a crankbait in rock creek.  All 4 bites were in 25 to 28 feet of water.  The temp in the marina was 43 in the morning and 47 in rock creek in the afternoon.  We got a loooong way to go.  But, I was glad to catch anything with water that cold.

God Bless,
CJ

Capt'n Mike,

Reese McBroom and I fished for a while on 2-17-10 with us catching
one bass at 2 1/2 pounds. The water temp was 45 to 48 degrees. That
water is cold.

There were 5 boats on the lake. We talked to all five, and only one
other fisherman caught a bass.

I'm ready for the lake to warm up.
