Fishing Report By Capt'n Mike and Friends:   Email Reports to Capt'n Mike

Temp 50*

12/30/07  Happy New Year and catch a big one in 2008.  Capt'n Mike

Mike,
Tony LoCascio and I spent a beautiful day on the lake today. Water temp was about 44 degrees on the surface and about 39 degrees at five foot down. We spent the day trying to learn to crappie fish with tiny jigs using 12 foot crappie poles and 6 lb line. Didn't catch a single crappie but caught a few bass, one at around 3 lbs. He was quite a handfull with the 12 ft rod and lots of heavy brush up river, but the long pole finally won out. I think there were a total of 5 or 6 boats at the lake all day. Guess I'll be at the Parks Dept tomorrow to get another annual permit. We're hoping to spend a night or two at the lodge with you soon to avoid the drive back and forth. Two weeks ago someone hit a deer on the highway right before it crosses Gobler Creek. I tried to miss it, but ran over it punching an antler through the left front tire. Not a good start to a day's fishing.

If this doesn’t make you laugh you don’t fish...

Subject: Tackle Shop

A woman goes into Bass Pro Shop to buy a rod and reel for her grandson's birthday. She doesn't know which one to get so she just grabs one and goes over to the counter.

A tackle Shop associate is standing there wearing dark shades. She says, "Excuse me, sir. Can you tell me anything about this rod and reel?"

He says, "Ma'am, I'm completely blind; but if you'll drop it on the counter, I can tell you everything from the sound it makes." She doesn't believe him but drops it on the counter anyway.

He says, "That's a six-foot Shakespeare graphite rod with a Zebco 404 reel and 10-LB. Test line. It's a good all around combination; and it's on sale this week for only $20.00."

She says, "It's amazing that you can tell all that just by the sound of it dropping on the counter. I'll take  it!" As she opens her purse, her credit ca rd drops on the floor.

"Oh, that sounds like a Master Card," he says.

She bends down to pick it up and accidentally breaks wind. At first she is really  embarrassed, but then realizes there is no way the blind clerk could tell it was she who tooted. Being blind, he wouldn't know that she was the only person around.

The man rings up the sale and says, "That'll be $34.50 please."

The woman is totally confused by this and asks, "Didn't you tell me the rod and reel were on sale for $20.00? How did you get $34.50?"

He replies," Yes, Ma'am. The rod and reel is $20.00, but the Duck Call is $11.00 and the Catfish Bait is 3.50.

What a salesman!!!

Hey Capn Mike. The fishing was great in November. The bass had the shad grouped up in the shallows up all the creeks.Caught good numbers of fish mainly on the windy warm days.Cranks and spinner baits did the best.Heres a picture of two of the better fish.
Doug.

11/26/07  We had a white Thanksgiving and a very good one at that.  Not much fishing though.  Capt'n Mike

Caught these fish back in October. Check out what I pulled out of the smaller fishes mouth. (bird)  Cade B Wilson

I decided to leave the bass alone & catfish. I caught two nice catfish. One 8lb 5oz & a 4lb 2oz. Here is the picture of the 8.  Randy Westbrook

11/18/07  Some pretty good action last week, mainly on white stuff in the brush.  Capt'n Mike

Capt'n Mike,

Helen and Booth Dyess went crappie fishing Nov. 13th at Lake
Alan Henry, and Booth caught this 17 and 1/2 inch, 2 lb. 7 oz.
crappie on a red jig. This may be the new lake record since
the old record is 2.43 pounds. This crappie is 1/100 of a
pound larger than the old record listed by Texas Parks and
Wildlife.

Thanks,  Booth Dyess

11/02/07  Water temp is right and the fish are beginning to bite.  Good Luck.  Capt'n Mike

Capt'n Mike,

Reese McBroom and I went fishing 10-30-07, and we caught 15
bass. We had two over 4 pounds, and several around three
pounds. We caught all the bass on shad crankbaits. The water
temperture was 64 degrees to 67 degrees.

10/24/07  Well every now and then ol'  Capt'n Mike  makes a prediction.  Time to go fishing, cool nights and a freeze this week, it should change things for the better.  Capt'n Mike

Capt'n Mike,

I went fishing Oct. 23rd, and the fishing was great. The wind
was really bad out of the north, but the fish were biting. I
caught this 7 lb. 15 oz. bass, and two more over 5 pounds. I
caught 13 in all on crank baits.

10/21/07  Want be long folks, the temp is in the 60's.  Capt'n Mike

Capt'n Mike,

I fished for five hours on 10-11-07, and caught 10 bass with
the largest going between 3 and 4 pounds. Most were caught on
Senko's with the other coming on 7 inch Camo power worms. I
could not fish early morning because of the lightning.

Fish Fun, Fish Safe,  Norman Clayton's Guide Services

10/15/07  At 7:15 last night the top water bite hit, I was told that it was great.  Probably the front moving thru, but I wish I was there.  Its getting close and these fronts will help bring down the lake temp.  Capt'n Mike

Pictured below, in front of Lake Alan Henry Lodges are Tommy, Shelly and Jimmy Rice of Hobbs N.M., big flathead weighed 37#, caught on big minnows from Grubbs.

10/05/07  Lots of small bass being caught but the big ones are not there yet.   Capt'n Mike

Capt'n Mike
Four of us stayed at Alan Henry Lodge from Sept23 thruSept28 caught lots of smaller bass in the 1 to 3 lb range with a few in the 6 lb range. Most caught on a Dick's popper with some on a Dick's Swim "n" jig. The rest were all caught on Dick's 4 in disk worm in either Amber pepper and Chart. tale or Amber pepper with a pearl tail. Also caught a few on a Smoky firecracker with a blue tail. Anyway not a really great fishing but a really good one. Thanks for taking such good care of us during out stay

Capt'n Mike,

Two clients and I fished a day trip on 10-03-07, and we caught
20 to 25 bass on top water, senko's, and power worms. Most of
the bass were caught on the power worms at a depth of 15 to 25
feet. We caught several bass in the 2 to 3 pound range, but we
could not find the larger bass.

09/25/07  Pretty slow this week, catfish are biting.  Capt'n Mike

Capt'n Mike,

Doug McCrary, from Andrews, and I fished during the night of
9-29-07. We started fishing about 10:30 p.m. until 8:00 a.m.
The wind blew hard all night which made it hard to fish worms,
we did manage to catch 11 bass with several going over 3
pounds.

Usually we can catch a lot more bass during the night fishing
trips, but the wind had a big part of keeping us from fishing
the good night time fishing places. The bass we caught were in
places I had never night fished before. Some of the new places
we tried did not have bass in them. So, Maybe it was good for
me to have the high wind so I would find new places to fish at
night because one of the places proved to be a very good place
to catch bass at night.

I caught some of the bass on a large black 1 oz. black
spinnerbait.

Capt'n Mike

Jessica, Zack, 5 year old Weston, and I fished on 09-25-07
during the day. Five year old Weston caught many perch, and he
would reel in the bass that I caught. So, He ourfished
everyone that day.

Jessica and Zack had never worm fished before, but by the end
of the day they had learned how to catch fish on Texas rigged
plastic worms.

It was a hard day to fish because of the front coming in. The
wind first blew out of the West, then our of the North, and
then out of the East. But, We finally had a good fun day
catching bass and perch.

This very nice family was from Lovington, N.M., and it was a
pleasure to have them in my boat.

09/21/07  Here's is a nice fish caught recently.  Capt'n Mike

This is the fish a friend of mine caught while we were out fishing at night off the main lake. We weighed him at grubs/brendas at then released him back in the lake. Thanks!  Brian Fleming

12# fish

,

Reese McBroom and I fished during the day on 9-18-07, and we
caught 18 bass on worms. The bass were around 15 to 25 feet
deep. We caught two or three good bass, but we didn't catch
the big bass we were looking for. We had one hang us up in the
trees. We didn't even get to see it.

That day there were only about 12 boats on the lake all day.
This is a fun time to be on the lake because you have it
nearly to yourself.

09/05/07

Hi Captain Mike,
Here is a picture of the new Lake Alan Henry record crappie.  The fish was caught early morning on 9-3-07 by Tim Dickinson of Canadian, TX.  The fish weighed 2.59 lbs, was 17" long with a 15" girth.  Tim is the son-in-law of Mark & Beckie Burtner of Levelland, TX.  I'm also attaching a photo of Tim's friend Jason Martin, also of Canadian with his crappie.  Jason's fish weighed 2.28 lbs and was caught at the same time as Tim's.  Jason's wasn't quite big enough for the record but was still a nice catch.  Please post this new lake record information and photo on your website.
Thanks,
Brandi Dickinson

08/28/07  Still finding bass in the flats and off the main body, in about 30-35 ft., crappie at night are good and the catfish are also biting at night.  Capt'n Mike

Capt Mike,

Jordan has game!!! Spooky!!!
Water temp 82, mostly clear, black and blue power
Worms are the ticket.

08/21/07  This rain has been good for the lake, lot's of nice fish being caught.  Capt'n Mike

Hello Capt'n  Mike,  We would like to share a few of our bigest fish pix ... Randy and Roxanne had a great few days of fishing (08-01-07 thru 08-03-07) even with the rain  ,Randy got his big 5.6 lbs Bass with his favorite-lure.  Roxanne was fishing with minow's about 20 to 30 ft deep when she got her 6lbs and 3.6 lbs Bass. The cropie were good too! We practice catch and release because we can't  come back and get them again next trip!!!

Roxanne , Randy

08/17/07  The catfishing has been picking up and the bass are still pretty decent.  Capt'n Mike

Capt'n Mike,   I went fishing with Ozzy McDaniel and Carl
Brown on the 8th of August. We fished in the afternoon, and a
little into the night. We caught 14 to 16 bass on worms. Here
is a picture of the largest bass Carl had every caught. The
bass were about 15 to 20 feet deep.

Thanks,  Norman Clayton's Guide Services

08/14/07  As hot as it is the bass are still biting in the flats up river.  Capt'n Mike

Captain Mike,

We have been averaging about 20-30 last two trips. Buzz bait bite on flats next to deep water early and late, black and blue power worms throughout the day. Believe it or not we have been catching lots of bass in 6'-10' throughout the heat of the day.

Attached is my son Jordan Lee with a big Spook fish.

Thanks again,

J.L.

08/07/07  The bass are in about 25 ft. water in the flats, watermelon, motor oil and pumpkin seed are your colors.  The crappie are in about 35 to 40 ft water, off the wall cliffs.  Capt'n Mike

We fished 7/29/07. Caught over thrity fish here are a few pictures.

Cade B. Wilson

08/03/07  Bass are on vacation, but the big crappie are biting in about 40ft. water off of the walls.  Capt'n Mike

These are fish we caught yesterday, Sat July 28th.  The crappie is 16 1/2'
and weighed in at 1.95 lbs.  We didnt' weigh or measure the catfish, but it
is a good size catfish to catch with a rod and reel.  We don't know how many
crappie we threw back, but we kept 10 of the largest.  Had a great time, as
always.

Joe & Cathy Scott
Lubbock, TX

Just thought that I would share these pictures with you. These were taken on June 15th. We got out on the lake at sunrise and once they started biting they didn't stop! Chris pulled out his first 2 within an hour. When he was reeling in his 3rd bass I was reeling in the first one I have ever caught at the same time! Over all we caught 5 bass in about 2 hours that day. We were using black and red spinners. We sure did find the honey hole that day!!

Have a GREAT day! And good luck out on the water!

Amanda Apgar And Christopher Rogers

07/21/07  Fishing is pretty good considering it is July.  Capt'n Mike

Capt'n Mike,

Larry Frymire and I fished all night on July 19th. Larry
caught 10 bass, and I caught 10 bass with the two largest
weighting in at 8 lbs. 7 ozs, and 9 lbs. 3 ozs.

It was very dark out on the lake since there was not a moon,
but the fishing was very rewarding. We started with top water
lures, but we caught most on 10 inch power worms. A few bass
were caught on wacky worms during the night. We had a great
time, and a great fishing trip.

Thanks,

Norman Clayton's Guide Services

I wanted to let you know that myself and 2 friends went out on Tuesday and caught crappie all day long, even in the heat of the day.  114 fish in all.  Most were crappie, about a dozen bass, and 2 cat.  We were fishing in a cove that was between 20 and 30 ft deep.  Most were caught between 8 and 15 ft down.  Most were small, 17 keeper crappie in all and a couple of nice bass.  Was a great time and most fish I have ever caught in a day!!

Daniel

07/19/07  The spotted bass have been real good lately, 3 to 4 # range.  They are in 20 to 30 foot water off of the main lake.  The crappie are biting at night, also the catfish are good at night.  Capt'n Mike

07/03/07  The bass are biting in the schools of shad.  The crappie are biting at night under lights.  Capt'n Mike

Capt'n Mike,

My brother Boyd and I fish all night Friday June 29th, and we
caught 27 bass.  The largest we caught was nearly 4 lbs. Most
were caught on 10" blueflake power worms. We had a good night
on quanity, but could not find the really large bass.  Maybe
next time we will get into the large fish.

I have noticed that the bass tend to average larger size
during the dark of the night, and the bass tend to be smaller
on the bright nights. I recently read an article in a fishing
magazine, and the author said the same thing about night
fishing in the summer months.

Norman Clayton's Guide Services

Capt’n Mike,

My fishing buddy Greg Cartwright and I fished all night Saturday June 30th.  We ended up with a very nice catch of crappie.  Greg caught the one on the left around 1 AM Sunday morning.  It measured out at 15” and 1.6 lbs on his scales.  I got the one on the right about 30 minutes later.  It measured out at 16” and its weight bounced between 2.2 and 2.3 lbs on his scales.  We stopped off at Diane’s Last Stop to get a more accurate weight and it came in at 2.29 lbs.  The owner said the lake record still stands at 2.36 lbs – real close.  The majority of our catch came in between 12” and 14”.  We caught very few small ones.  Alan Henry is not only an outstanding lake for bass and catfish, the crappie are getting unbelievable.  I’d enjoy seeing more pictures and reports being sent in from other crappie fisherman.

Good Fishing Everyone!

Bill Webb

You are right. Spinners baits worked good early & when I saw the shad. I wormed the heat of the day the last two weekends & caught several nice fish. I lost 3 big fish that broken off on 14lb line. I've Never had a fish pull that hard & work my drag so violently.
    Thanks for your help!!!!!

06/29/07  The schooling bass have been very active.  The crappie are good at night as well as catfish.  Capt'n Mike

Capt. Mike,

Tim Carter and his 11 year old son, A.J., and I fished on June
22nd for the schooling bass. We fished from about 8 A.M. until
12 noon. These schooling bass are really a great way to hook a
new young fisherman on bass fishing. We caught around 15 bass
up to 2 1/2 lbs. with A.J. catching the most. Father and Son
had a great day together on the lake. In the afternoon, A.J.
wanted to catch some perch, so we spent the rest of the time
catching perch.

Thanks,   Norman Clayton's Guide Services

06/26/07  Some real nice bass are being caught still.  Here is A C Harris and Kathy Hill of Abernathy TX. with some nice ones.  Capt'n Mike

06/24/07  It's been pretty decent fishing lately for summer.  There was a 12# bass caught last week and the crappie and catfish have been good at night.  Bubba and Ronnie Schnaubert of Hobbs, NM. caught some good keep catfish.

sorry about the picture quality camera on wrong setting guys!

06/01/07  Fishing has been petty good, the weather seem like it has been turning them on.  Capt'n Mike

CAPT'N MIKE, CHECK OUT THE SMILES ON THESE 3 GIRLS!!! THESE ARE JOHN GRANTHAM'S GRANDKIDS. LEFT TO RIGHT AUTUMN OF SLATON MAKAYLA OF BROWNFIELD(BJ OLIVER'S DAUGHTER) PAYTON OF SLATON. Thought you might enjoy seeing my kids catching fish Memorial Day weekend when the boat traffic was so heavy. We had over 30 bass and spotted bass together in a 4 hour period. It was a good day on the water. Even caught two crappie myself on a DD-22.
Paul

05/26/07  Lots of Bass being caught up to about 8#, spinners, sinko's and buzz baits seem to work.  The crappie are good it you can find them.  The Catfish have been slow the last week but that will change.  Capt'n Mike

Capt. Mike, Sorry for taking so long to make a report. I
fished with Mike Bell and Josh Martin on May 7th. The fishing
was great with us catching at least 30 bass with Josh Martin
catching the largest at 6 lbs. 12 ozs. The bass were hitting
Swim Senko's in watermelon color.

Norman Clayton's Guide Service

05/22/07  The spinner baits and sink-o rigged with a 1/4 weight worked slowly around the trees seems to be working on the bass, the catfish are biting too.  Capt'n Mike

Joe Joiner and John Grantham were at it again this weekend. The rain Friday night did not stop them from dropping those lines. Look at their big catch Saturday morning. The catfish are hot. This is Joe’s Mom Ruby Joiner ( Wofforth TX ) she got in on the fun. See attached picture

05/18/07  Rain and more rain, this supposed to be a desert, you can certainly say the lake is in good shape and full.  The fish are biting just not very big.  A 7#er bass was caught yesterday and the crappie have been good.  Capt'n Mike

Hello, folks!! It has been awhile since I have had a chance to write fishing report. Since I have spent the last 15 days on the water, with a total of 150 hours, I have alot to tell you and some good pics. The fish are biting 5" Sinkos and Shakyhead jigs. The TOP WATER BITE is on...big time. I am catching my top water fish on Zara Spooks, and Slash Baits, and don't forget the Buzz Baits..around the flats. We currently have 3 stages of fish to fish for.
Right now we have Post spawn fish I have seen alot of fry in the water. We also have some pre spawn fish full of eggs. Then  lots of the BIG fish are still on beds. The bite is going to be very good for the next 60 days with good weather. We are currently catching 50 to 75 fish a day on a good day. Bad days the catch is about 30 fish.
Here are the pics of my customers and thier catch, by the way to my nephew Steven, he caught a 12.10 on Mothers Day while visiting his mom. He was guided by my son Justin Pool.
Congrats to the both of you.

05/14/07  Evening Edition  === See if any of you know the answer to the following question.  Capt'n Mike

Capt. Mike:

Fished fri. 5/11/07 tough day after front moved through. Did notice
something that
puzzled me. Two guys were in a pontoon boat stnding on top their
sight-fishing deck
with a squirt bottle spraying a yellowish-green substance into the
water. They were
not fishing although they were trying to locate spawning bass. What
was the purpose
of spraying the liquid into the water, what was it and is this legal?

Answers to question

Mike,

They were probably using liquid soap or gasoline as a “surfactant” to remove any of that green pollen from the trees.  By squirting it on the water it pushes the pollen away thus revealing the fish below.  I believe that gasoline is one of the most effective ones in this situation, but since it is illegal, many use a solution with liquid soap.  I don’t know whether the soap trick is legal or illegal but had several people tell me that they use it to clear the water.

I don’t know if that was what they were doing but it sure sounds like it.

Thanks

05/14/07  The catfishing has been good, lots of blue and channel cat being caught and some big flatheads.  This big flathead was caught this weekend by Jackey Burris, John Grantham and Rodney Parker it weighed 33#.  Man that's some good eating.  Capt'n Mike

05/10/07  Lots of good bass being caught, in the 5 to10# range, most still being bucks are females with eggs.  Capt'n Mike

05/07/07  Evening edition, seems like everyone was catching today even Randell Stillwell of Abernathy, witnessed by  Jack Strong, boated this 7#er.  They must have been biting.  Capt'n Mike

Awesome... Thanks for the advice. I went fishing on Saturday, I caught a hand full of fish on a crank bait and a rubber worm. I had a great time. Hopefully someday I will be able to write you and show you a lunker bass but for now here is picture of what I can send you. It was only 2.5 pounds but it sure was fun to catch... and release!!!!  Have a great week and thanks again!!!!

Hello Capt. Mike,

Here is a fish that Michael Pullen from Amarillo caught at AH on 3-31-07.  She weighted 10.14.

Caught off the bed after we bagged the male.

Thanks!

05/07/07  Dale Walker had a good weekend, with a strong catch of crappie and this 44# flathead.  Capt'n Mike

05/05/07  Should be a good weekend, bass are starting to respond a little better.  Several people have said that they think the spawn is starting, about time.  Capt'n Mike

Hey Mike,

Here are a couple of fish my son and I caught this week. Riley’s is 8lbs 6oz and mine is 7lbs 4 oz.

Fuzz

05/01/07  Really moving up on the beds today, beautiful day.  Here is one that Jackie Wright of Fayetteville Ar. boated today.  She weighed in a 9.5#.

04/30/07  A 12# and several around 10#s were caught the past few days, but no sharelunkers.  The bass are still not what you might say on the bed, seeing a lot of bucks still, but no big mama.  May will be the month looks like.  Crappie are still in 4 to 5 ft. water.  Capt'n Mike

Green Pastures Bass Club’s youngest member, Riley Herridge, caught this 8lb 6oz fish on May 1st using a green pumpkin jig.

MIKE, MY SON AND I LEFT LEVELLAND TO DO A LITTLE FISHING THIS PAST SATURDAY AT LAKE ALLEN HENRY.I HOPED THAT THE WEATHER HAD SLOWED THE SPAWN AND THAT THE CRAPPIE I HAD CAME UPON TWO WEEKS PRIOR,WOULD STILL BE STAGING IN OR AROUND THE SAME LOCATION. WELL WE LUCKED OUT, MY SEVEN YEAR OLD SON CAUGHT THIS 2.27# CRAPPIE OFF A MINNOW ON HIS SECOND CAST. HE, AS WELL AS MYSELF WERE VERY EXCITED. AFTER CATCHING OUR FILL WE WENT TO GRUBS TO SHOW OFF OUR CATCH.
RICKY & REED ROGERS,
LEVELLAND, TX.

PS Chandler Walker caught a 17" crappie, sorry I lost the pictures, Dale.   Capt'n Mike

04/26/07  Mac McConnell caught this monster today.  11#er.  on  a  bed, had to wait 3 1/2 hr. for the fish.  Capt'n Mike

04/25/07  If the wind will ever lay, there will be some good fishing going on.  Looks like tomorrow our weather pattern will change and the winds will subside.  Crappie still in shallows and the bass are hard to find.  Lots of bucks but not many females.  Capt'n Mike

The big fish are finally moving up on the beds, I am seeing quiet a few large fish on and around their beds.
The full blown spawn is yet to come, within the next 3 to 4 days with good weather, it will even get better.  3 days before the next full moon there will be a major wave of spawning activity.  For those people who want to get away from the sight fishermen, it can get crazy, I suggest fishing in the stained water in the north banks on the main lake and in Rocky Creek, and even in Red Branch, and don't forget the Brazos River past the highline poles, there are plenty of Giant Bass to be caught that no one is fishing for. There is very little pressure and the fish are plentiful. These bass are responding well to spinner baits and even buzz baits. Lets not forget a jig and craw black and blue, keep it off the main creek bends. I do have May days and June days available.
April 18th I went fishing by myself and caught the first Budweiser Share Lunker bass at Lake Alan Henry, 13.2-pounds, she was 26 inches long and 20.5 in girth. the same measurements that she had in 2005 and 2006. We named her Annie. Not only has she been the same size every year she was caught the Same Month and Week each year. The TPWD told me that the device inplant that helps keep record of this fish provided this information. Annie broke all Records and is the only fish that has traveled 2400 miles to talk about it. I am releasing her in June after she spawns with her fry, back into Lake Alan Henry.
Here are some pics of Annie.
I'm Phillip Pool and I'm Gone Fish'n

P.S. May will be better than April this year, and the fish will continue to spawn until June.

04/23/07 Lots of bass being caught, it is defiantly time to go fishing.  As one angler told me yesterday they were getting a  warning ticket from the game warden for no throw cushion and had 5#ers busting shad all around them.  They said the it took for ever to write the ticket, while watching the big bass hit the water.  They had a good day.  Also here is an interesting story on Phillip Pools sharelunker.   http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/outdoors/tompkins/4732522.html  Capt'n Mike

John Grantham( Lake Alan Henry) and Joe Joiner( Lubbock, TX) caught Lake record blue cat yesterday at Lake Alan Henry. 21 ½ lbs. 35 inches long. It was weighed at house next to the Lodge and pictures taken but thought I would send some to you just in case camera problem. Papers filled out at Brendas. John now holds Lake record on Crappie and Blue Cat. Fishing was good this weekend and John was thrilled as was Joe. Hope you can get attached pictures up. Let me know if you need anything else. Thanks

04/19/07  You knew it would happen soon and yesterday was to pretty, Phillip Pool caught the 4th bass over 13# this year.  It weighed in at a little over 13#.  It is the first to be put in the sharelunker program this year.  There are alot of bucks being seen so the time is right to go fishing.  Capt'n Mike

04/13/07  There was a 15#er caught about a week age, it was on the local news with pictures of the fish at the fellows house, hope the fish got back to the lake.  Catch and Release Please.  There were reports of bass on the beds yesterday, they are trying.  We will see what the weather does to them tonight and tomorrow.  The crappie are biting up in shallow water, with several big one's in the 2 # range being caught by bass fishermen.  Spinners in the dirty water have been the ticket to bass and crappie.  Capt'n Mike

Jimmy Rice, Tommy Rice, John Grantham, Charlie Bostick have had a heck of a fishing trip these are the ones to keep and eat yum yum good!  There lucky day Friday the 13

The blue was 15 3/4# and yellow or flathead was 45#.

04/11/07  No Spawn yet, it's just been cold.  We should have a good next 2 days, there should be some fish caught.  Most of the fish that have been caught are above the trees in about 15ft water, on rattle traps and spinners.  The lake is full, the problem is the weather with the extremes  we have been having no wonder the bass are confused.  The freeze Saturday fooled the mesquite trees  for about the 3rd time in 60 years down here.  The catfishing has been good as well as the crappie in the shallows. Capt'n Mike

Hey,Captn. Mike,It may have been cold and breezy. However the bite was excellant.Caught 10 nice fish in about an hour mid evening. When the sun popped out the bite ended.Called it a day. Here`s a photo of two of the largest fish.Five of the fish made a 25 lb. stringer.Put the girls back on their beds as soon as possible.See yall next week.

Doug.

Charlie Bostick, Jimmy Rice and Tommy Rice of Hobbs, New Mexico caught these nice catfish Wednesday, biggest a big yellow at 46#.

I have not been writing many fishing reports this year because I have been on the water for over 40 days so far this year. The fishing has been outstanding. We are currently boating 30 to 40 fish a day, lots of real nice spotted bass from 2 to 4 lbs. The spotted bass fight so hard, their strenght is incrediable. I'm also catching some big black bass. So far this year I have had 3 customers with fish over 9lbs. The cold front blew in and is going to set the bite back a few days. When the sun comes out and stays the fish will rebound quickly. Spawn is late this year due to the cold weather and rains. Everytime the lake temp goes up the cold weather knock the temp back down. May is going to be the best month for the spawn this year. Last year I caught fish off of beds until June. June will also be a great month. Currently I'm catching fish on Sinkos and Jerk Baits and some nice fish on Lizards, all on dark colors.  I have 5 open days left in April for trips. In May I have several days open and would like to accomadate you on some Top Water action and you will still be able to catch bedding fish. I have had a great time with all of my customers, I had 5 customers so far this year that caught the biggest bass ever. You could be next..here are some pics.
Until next time,

Capt. Mike

We made our annual trek to lake Alan Henry last week and fished every day. We caught loads of small fish from the one to two pound range, too many to mention. We did catch three nice fish, the one on Monday weighed 7lbs. 11 ounces and then two nice fish on Friday during the cold spell, the first and the one pictured was lbs. ounces and we ands caught a 6 plus pounder just right after, sorry my scales died so I didn't get an exact weight. Things are picking up most have not hit the beds yet but are staging, it is fixing to get real good in the next couple of weeks.

04/08/07  Talk about cold, 29* Saturday morning in Justiceburg, bur.  Not much happening but the few that braved the cold have actually caught some fish.  Nothing big but up to 5# range.  Tuesday forecast puts us back to 83*, and yes the freeze did fool the mesquite trees down here.  Capt'n Mike

04/05/07  The weather still is the problem, they have just not come up to the beds yet, or should I say in large numbers to spawn.  The best luck I heard of yesterday was fishing a sinko in about 10 to 15 ft. and working it off the tops of the trees.  He said they were real sluggish.  Capt'n Mike

Hey Mike,Fished hard on Mon. and got skunked.I found three good spots with good fish on beds. Not able to fish them any more due to crowds.Tues. morning.Caught six nice fish. All over 18 inches.Great two hours mid morning.Largest fish was a Spot.Just over 20 inches.Could have been a lake record.Took acouple of pictures and put here back on beds.My scale weighed her in at just over 6 lbs.Nothing like two hours of bite and catch a stringer over 20 lbs.Hey Alan Henry rocks.Back next week.
Doug Hunt

04/03/07  I think this might set up to be the best week so far, it has been kind of slim for this lake.  I think the spawn is about 2 weeks behind and since this lake spawns later than the rest of Texas, we are just now seeing more bedding fish being caught.  This lake is unusual because the spawn is late and this year the cold temps have set it back farther.  I would say its about time to do some serious fishing folks.  Capt'n Mike

Capt. Mike this past weekend (3-31-07) was really good fishing. We caught 22 big Crappie and 12 Bass & half of them were over 18". We caught all these fish up river in shallow water 8 to 15 foot deep.

See ya soon

Last Tuesday March 27 was a perfect day to go fishing.  Caught this girl in 9ft of water off a bed.  She weighed a little over 11 pounds on my spring scale I'm not quit sure how accurate it is.  No the less I released her where she was caught with a few pictures as memories.  Thank you for preaching Catch and Release with everyones help Alan Henry will be great for a long time.  Keep it up Capt.

This 2.22lb Crappie was caught Sunday, April 1st about 6:00a.m.  It looks
like the Crappie are starting to move up into the shallows.

03/31/07  It's still pretty tough with all of the bad weather, but I recommend that everyone go fishing. So far a 11# bass was biggest I heard of today.  Capt'n Mike

She
weighted 9 lbs. 11 ozs.

Thanks, Norman

03/27/07  There were 2 bass caught in tournaments this weekend that were 14# fish, they were weighed and released back into the lake at the crappie house.  Please if you catch such a lunker and do want to put into the sharelunker program which benefits the lake, please take the time and effort to carry such a grand fish back to the bed it was on.  I am sorry for venting but the sharelunker program is good for the bassfishing in the state.  The fish and fry will be returned to the lake.  If you should catch such a fish carry it up to Brenda's Last Stop {formally Grubs} and they will weigh it and call the game warden.  Fishing is getting better now..  Capt'n Mike

Capt’n Mike

I was not aware that there were two 14# fish caught this weekend. However I did catch a 14.4 and I don’t know were you got your information from but the fish was returned to her bed. I know that the sharelunker program is good for the state and our lake but she was in my livewell for over six hours and I did not want to put anymore stress on her so I decided to put her back. I have been sightfishing for quit some time on this lake and have caught some big fish and I would never let a fish like that go by the crappie house. Just wanted to let you know that the fish was taken care of and your comment on the website is not accurate

Cameron

Thanks for the letter Cameron, I apologize. my info was wrong on your fish.. you did the right thing.  Capt'n Mike

Hey Captn.
Went fishing Saturday eveing/night for crappie.  Pretty tough fishing.  Only got 3 keepers.  A couple on white jigs, the rest on minnows.  Didn't find anyone in the shallows.  Maybe the weather had them put off a bit.
Thanks for all that you do with the website.

03/23/07  Some good bass caught yesterday, several over 8#, water temp is up.  The crappie are biting up in the shallow part of the Brazos.  Capt'n Mike

Mike here is a picture from 3-21-07.21 inch Largemouth.
Doug Hunt.

03/18/07  Mother Nature stepped in this weekend and slowed things down, the the cold or cool front was just enough to set em' back a bit, but you can bet it's real close.  Big fish in the 6# range no cigar.  Capt'n Mike

03/15/07 As warm as it has been and the water temp coming up, and the weather being on the mild side this weekend, conditions are right for a big fish to be caught.  I expect that the big bass will be showing up by the end of the weekend on someones line.  The action has been picking this week, seems like most people are catching, but no real big ones yet, I'm talking  sharelunker.  Capt'n Mike

Capt. Mike we fished mainly back up the river and caught 1 pretty good sized one up that way. After a few hours of that we decided to take a leave to go up to the main lake but were halted as are engine died. So me and my grandpa have returned to Odessa. On the 14th we caught 3 all together up on the main lake and 2 back up the river. worms were what we used. I caught site of 60 degree water up in one part of the river. Here are some pictures that i thought you might like. They are attached.

03/10/07  Time to go fishing, some pretty good bass caught the last couple of days, crappie are biting shallow.  Capt'n Mike

03/08/07  Ready, set, Hold it, but it getting better, not much caught in past week but water temp is going up. 55 reported today.  The next week we have one day that dips to 69* and rest are in the 70's to 80's which means down here it will be probably in high  the80's.  It's coming folks.  Capt'n Mike

Mike,

My eleven year old son Jordan Lee caught his 1st 6# Wednesday!
Spinnerbaits fished very slow up creeks on top of flats seems to
be pretty good. Found some 58 degree water up several creeks.

Happy Fishing!

J.L

03/07/2007. We went to Alan Henry and found the water temperature to be 54 degrees around the rock creek area. We caught three fish altogether the best being just under four pounds. This lake continues to fish hard for me. The fish we did catch were on sinkos and one on a rattle trap. Maybe someday I will figure this lake out.

03/05/07  Things are picking up, several good bass  caught this past week, the crappie are biting and the water temp is coming up.  Capt'n Mike

Mike,
Caught this crappie Feb 28th. on an orange rat-l-trap bass fishing in
15 ft, temp 46 degress, main lake.  I thought it was a big spot at first but
was shocked when I saw it was a crappie.  No big bass that day but we caught
9 all together.  The warmest water we found was 51 degress way up Sandy
Creek.  But, we didn't check any other major creeks.  I guess I need to do
more crappie fishing!
     God Bless,

Hi Mike
Thought I would share this with you. I've been experimenting with making my own spinnerbaits Earlier that day I caught a 3-4 pounder got him up to the side of the boat and lost him along with my last homemade spinnerbait. I dumped out all my spinnerbaits on the deck of the boat and got out my needle nose pliers and made a duplicate. Got lucky and this was the result.
She weighed in at 12 # and 27" long. She was caught deep on a 1oz. spinnerbait and unfortunately had to keep her due to the depth pressure. I enjoy your reports and read them all the time.
Keep up the good work.
Thanks

03/01/07  If you don't have a day like yesterday, fishing has been picking up for some and not for others.  They seem to be deep and in the flats but that can change daily now.  Capt'n Mike

Looking forward to another great year of fishing at Lake Alan Henry. The fishing is improving daily, water temp holding steady at 48 degrees. However I have found 58.9 degrees in the back of the creeks. We are catching fish on deep diving crank baits in 14 to 20 foot of water. I am also on great spinner bait bite in 4 to 6 foot of water. The bigger fish are coming out of deeper water on crank baits. Red is the color!!! The shallow fish range from 2 to 4 lbs. we are catching them on white spinner baits with the big Indiana blade.
Slow is the key to fishing right now, we are also catching some fish on Black and Blue Jigs.  Within the next 2 weeks the chatter bait will be the meal ticket.
I am currently booking trips for March and April. I have access to 4 guides for the larger group trips available. I am a licensed professional guide with this being the only job that I have, with over 250 days a year on the water. We stay on the fish year round and can tell you what bait and pattern will work best for you. Even the avid fisherman will find our new techniques very valuable.

02/23/07  As I write this report the clouds are building and I am sure that east of here the sever storms will create havoc.  We will get the winds tomorrow, up to 60mph.  So with that in mind, here is the best fishing report of the season so far.  Capt'n Mike

Mike,

Get out your suspending DD22's! Caught a 7#,6#,3# and broke off another
yesterday up Gobbler.
Fish very slow and even slower, all bites came when the bait was sitting
suspended. Water temp
Up Gobbler was 44-46! Water is full! This is going to be a great year on
this lake!!!

On 02/16/07, Jason Geese of El Paso caught two bass while pre-fishing for the ABA tournament held on 02/17/07 and 02/18/07.  One fish was 11 lbs 5oz and the other a respectable 5 lbs.  The ABA tournament on 02/17/07 was won with a five fish limit totaling 17.15 lbs all of which were caught on jigs fished in five to twelve feet depts. Big Bass was won on 02/17/07 with a 5.85 lbs. fish.  On 02/18/07 the ABA tournament was won with a total of three fish weighing in at 6.02 lbs. all of which were caught on a silver crank bait fished in twelve to fifteen feet of water.  Big Bass was won on 02/18/07 with 4.12 lbs. fish.  A total of 56.67 lbs of fish were weighed for the two days tournaments.  The bites were few and far between, however some respectable fish were caught on spinner baits, crank baits, worms and jigs.  T he water ranged from 43 to 45 degrees.

02/15/07  I had a report of a big bass caught off of the crappie, I heard it was in the 10# range and one caught on the lake in the 11# range.  One fellow said that they were more shallow than he expected to find fish.  Its still winter and the way it looks we could have a mild week, but that might change in the next 12 hours, you know how that goes.  Capt'n Mike

PS the tournaments change on a weekly basis right now

02/12/07  OK here is a not so good fishing report, remember when I am not writing it usually means that the fishing is bad,  It's been real slow, only small ones and they are scarce.  Capt'n Mike

01/24/07  It sure has been terrible weather here, not much snow but real cold.  Just to remind everyone that 2years ago the last weekend in January produced 4 sharelunkers at Lake Alan Henry, so don't count this lake out in the winter.  It's slow and they are deep, but they are there. I would like to start this year off by thanking everyone who supports this website as well as the sponsors. without them it would not be possible.  The next people I would like to thank is all of you catch and release guys, you are the ones that share the vision of a great lake taken care of by the people who enjoy it. Please Catch and Release.  Capt'n Mike

PS Keep the reports coming in this spring, it going to be great.

01/03/07  Some good fish were caught over the holidays, they were mostly in deep water.  Capt'n Mike

01/01/07  The 2007 fishing year has started, the lake is in perfect shape.  The recent rain has put Lake Alan Henry to within a few inches of being full. You can say what you want but this is the boss lake in Texas right now.  For the last 2 years more sharelunkers have come out of this lake than any other in Texas.  With the type of good fishermen that fish and help keep the lake up by Catch and Release. it should remain strong and healthy.  Obey the lake rules and let your good sense guide your hand in releasing the big ones back.  A picture and a replica trophy not a mount are the way to honor this lake as well as any lake you fish.  This lake is full of channel, blues, and flathead catfish as well as crappie that are far better to eat than the bass. Please enjoy the lake and take your trash with you.  Capt'n  Mike

At the top of this report are the past 6 years history of fishing the lake.  This should be a great year.  Remember always Catch & Release.

Happy New Fishing Year, Best of Luck

Capt'n Mike
