Fall fishing has busted loose.  If you watch the weather and can get to the lake before the cold fronts hit, then you can catch alot of quality fish. I am currently boating 20 to 30 fish a day, weather permiting. The fish have started to move up out of the deeper water and I am seeing alot of large fish schooling, they are chasing bait fish. I am catching my fish with a special technique. I have found out that the fish are not on the bottom.  I am also catching quality fish on top water baits and they are really responding to buzz baits.  I think that the fishing will stay good through out November and maybe through December depending on the water temperature.
If you don't want to go fishing and you would rather go Hunting, give me a call. I have some prime deer hunting, turkey hunting, and as always to many HOGS. I have day hunts or sight and stalk hunts for trophy bucks.  Our property is not over hunted and I have no hunters around my land. I am approximatively 90 min. from Lubbock. Just give me a call and I will be glad to give you all the details. My prices are very affordable for the West Texas area. I have some of the BEST quail hunting in West Texas also.

Mike,

We had a great day on Alan Henry yesterday (Oct. 18th).  We caught fish consistently through the day.  The fish were on the outside edges of the brush piles and mainly on the primary and secondary points.  We caught most of them on spinner baits.  Many of them were spots, but we did get a few largemouth.  Thanks for your reports, they have helped a lot!

Steve Winger

10/13/05  It's just about fishing time, let it get below 70* and the fun begins.  These fronts and cooler nights will are coming fast.  Capt'n Mike

10/03/05  Don't have much to brag about in September, seems the fish took the month off.  For such a good August, September has been bad.  Most of the fish are deep except in the afternoons when you are seeing some top water action.  There is alot of yellow caterpillars down here, they should turn a crappie on, if minnows don't work.  It should get alot better. this month.  Capt'n Mike

09/28/05  Well it looks like fall is in the air.  The water temp is falling and the bass are beginning tho bite,  Hopefully the price of gas will fall too.  Capt'n Mike

09/12/05  The fall fishing season is right around the corner, some good activity this week with the weather starting to change, but the best will be in October.  Capt'n Mike

08/29/05  This may well be the best summer fishing yet.  Lake is in good shape, still running over the spillway.  The bass have been as good as you get in the summer, topwater and spinner.  The crappie have been real good at night.  Capt'n Mike

08/14/05 Lake is going over the spillway, good time to catfish though.  The big yellows should be running.  Remember the big yellows live a long life only take what you use.  Capt'n Mike

08/09/05 This has been an amazing summer good bass fishing in the middle of the summer, what a lake.  The big yellows have been running, crappie not to good.  Capt'n Mike

Those  dog days of summer are over. The  # of big fish caught in the last 15 days
is a testimony in itself.... We have one of the best lakes in the country.... They are busting those topwater lures in the mornings and eating big worms thru-out the day. I know the gas is high so I have some Sept.  specials. Just get to the lake and I will take it from there. All you have to do is get on the boat.  I went out Sunday evening with a good friend and this big 10 lb. bass ran into my hook. I have been guiding on this lake for many years. I can show you some good spots. I can show you how to use your electronics. I can teach you where to look for bass at different times of the year. You can stand on the front deck with me for one on one instruction. Please call me on my cell as Im never at home for e-mail. I will give you an honest report of whats going on .
We have a new Lodge going up right now at the lake...so go ahead and set up those tournaments.

The fishing in July was as hot as the weather. It will be even hotter in August so will the bass fishing. We are catching alot of 2lb to 4lb bass and we are also hooking up with some big fish. This month so far the biggest we have caught is 9lbs with several in the 7lb range. We are catching these fish anywhere from 5' to 25' of water depending on the cloud cover and the time of day. We're catchin the Great Ol' Big Ones on 10" and 12" worms.  All you have to do is give me a call and book a trip and I will show you How, What, Where, When, and Why the big fish are biting. Take a look at these pics from a trip on July 27th. Here is a 9lber and  two fist fulls of quality fish. I've got 2 boats fishing the lake,
one on the east end and one on the west end. If we're not catching them no one is. Don't miss out on some great summer time fishing. If you don't fish the next full moon you have missed out on the possible trip of a life time. Come catch a big one and have fun doing it. Go by your local ACADEMY SPORTING AND OUTDOORS STORE and grab you some (SNAKES) 10' and 12" worms. congradulations Clay on your 9lber the Biggest Bass you've ever caught. We'll catch a bigger one next time.

07/27/05  The lake area caught a 2"ince rain and maybe more in some areas.  The catfishing should be good today up river.  The fishing over all has been real good for July.  Capt'n Mike

07/20/05  Well it looks like Emily will not affect our weather this weekend, fishing has been great for middle of the summer.  Capt'n Mike

It's me again. Me and my buddies went fishing a couple days ago and since the crappie weren't biting I threw on a dark green frog and jumped it on top of the moss growing close to the dock. Before I knew it, I landed another great bass! At the lake, it weighed 8 lb on a old spring loaded scale and was then weighed on another scale and read 12. I'm not really sure how much it weighed but I know it was a big ole fish that appeared to be still full of eggs. It fought great and also had a hook in it that was about to expire if you know what I mean. Its amazing that hook didn't tear up her insides on the way through. She was promptly released to fight another day. Its the middle of summer and bass are still loaded with eggs! Whats the deal???

Your Tech angler,

Mike Modisett

mike ,
here is  a fish my son Andrew caught thurs evening  .....fishing out of his tube.....do not know what she weighed ....forgot scales....but she was 26" long........we took several pictures
then he gave her a kiss and put her back......lake sure looks great,  first visit this year

07/12/05  Well you can never give up on this lake, just when you think the summer heat has run all the big fish off you get reports like these in July.  Several nice bass were caught last week, including a 13# youth state record, follow this link http://lubbockonline.com/stories/070805/gen_070805028.shtml , and a 49# yellow cat was caught yesterday.  It seems these storms have turned them on.  Capt'n Mike

07/08/05  Looks like the we morning hours, till about 9am may be the time to fish.  Good reports on crappie and catfish at night.  Capt'n Mike

Cliff

My daughter caught this nice 7 # on a ring worm in 10 feet of water at 6am
on 070405. The lake is in good shape and I was really surprised that it was
not to busy on July 4th.well anyway at 3 Am it was nice. We caught a lot of
fish from 3am to 9am then they shut off. I really hope everyone is
practicing caught and release this one is back where we caught her.

06/30/05  Man has it been hot.  The fish think so too, top water in the morning and deep in the  afternoon.  The catfish have been good on trotlines and crappie at night but the bass have been real picky.  But just when you think nothing is happening here comes a 10#er and more, what a lake.  Capt'n Mike

Hey Mike,
Where are you, I check the site almost everyday and no post?
In the last week we have had a 10#15oz,9#2oz, 6 over 4#. lots of small fish most of them in deep water. The 10# had bloody tail and full of eggs. Of coarse she went right back in.
Hope to see some fishing reports soon.

If your out in the heat of the day , the only thing your going to catch
is a bad sunburn or a heat -stroke; ...  be careful.... and drink plenty of cold fluids
The key is to fish early in the morning and know where these fish are going to surface. The topwater action is awesome. By 10 am its all over....till late evening-then it happens again. WOW...double trouble !!!
Lets go fishing. I will give you 2 trips for the price of 1. All you have to do is get on the boat. Lures are tied on and the cooler is iced down with drinks and snacks. Everything is provided. I am a licensed, fully insured guide

You can fish on the front deck for 1 on 1 instruction on casting , working the lures, looking for the small tell tales in the water to locate bass feeding on shad.  This year we have boated over 100 ...5 lb bass,.....25 over 10 lb.s  I have lots of photos any many on this webpage of my customers with fish. The top water action is very good, especially from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. The bass are suspended in the tops of the trees and are biting top waters during the heat of the day. The larger fish are biting buzz baits. My favorite buzz bait to throw at Lake Alan Henry is the Strike King Elite Buzz Bait Bleeding Bait. I'm also catching large numbers of fish on the Swim'n Image by Excalibur,  I use 15lb test line, althought this is a shallow running bait,  I'm fishing the bait on a jerk retrieve. It is amazing how life like this bait looks in the water. It is the same size as the shad that the bass are feeding on and the fish find it irresistible. I'm also catching some real nice bass on a Carolina rigged 10" Power Worm and I'm fishing the Drop Shot on the points. Also folks, don't forget your Wacky Worms (watermelon and red flake)  the fish will continue to bite this bait all summer long. There are alot of fish schooling in the 2lb to 4lb range with an occasional big fish in the school. If you want to catch some big fish on top waters please give me a call or e-mail me. I have half day trips or full day trips don't be afaird of the heat..the Bass are biting!! All the tackle I have told you about is available at your local ACADEMY SPORTING AND OUTDOORS store.

06/18/05  Looks like the bass are starting  to bust up the schools of shad.  One 7# bass was caught this morning.  Top water in the morning are a little productive but to tell the truth when Capt'n Mike not saying much the fish are not biting.  Catfish has slowed, but it will be back soon. Capt'n Mike

My first trip to Alan Henry. Drove up from San Angelo.
06/11/05. Caught this one on a Berkley Power Bait 7 inch worm that one of the friendly local anglers gave to me. What a well managed fishery. This lake will only get better as long as most anglers practice catch and release.

06/02/05  With the wild weather that has been going on you need to have a plan as to what to do if you are caught in storm or hail on this lake.  How would you do in baseball size hail or in 5ft waves.  Think about it, not wanting to scare anyone but during the spring it is a possiblity.  This  lake tends to fish good right before and during bad weather so all of you like me who fish then need to have a plan.  Fishing is still good, on pretty much everything,  with some real good catfish being caught.  Capt'n Mike

6-11-05  Water 68 degrees,  Fished half a day saturday and we caught alot of fish on top water and crank baits.  We got lucky and were in the right place at the right time when they started chasing shad to the surface.  We stayed in one spot for an hour, 40 feet deep, rattle traps and top water plugs and we caught about fifteen fish with the biggest being six and rest were all good fish.

Had a great day at the weekend Sunday. I caught many fish in about six to eight feet of water just flipping any small soft plastic bait in between the trees, I guess with the overcast skies the fish were not tight to the cover.  I caught this 12.3 on a bed after catching the 3lb male.  There were two others within fifteen yards that were also over ten pounds.  After catching the bigger one of the three I decided to leave the others alone and let them make more big ones!!!!!!  I let her go close to the boat ramp after showing some kids. I told them to hang on to there rods!  I wish I had a good story but all it took was about ten blind flips with a 10inch power worm and she was off the the races.  I will say that it felt like a boulder when I set the hook.  I saw many fish on beds still in the Gobbler area but that as much as I can pinpoint it right now.  The wind was about eight miles an hour so even though the skies were overcast most of the day the hunting was still good.  This frontal boundry pic was taken two weeks ago.  It was a kodak moment for us but not for the folks under it.

05/26/05  The lake caught a 1/2 to 1 inch of rain last night, it might slow em down today but the catfishing will be good.  Capt'n Mike

Bass are biting very good, on the Rapala jerk bait. We are currently catching 30 to 50 fish a day on this bait.  This is no joke..I have never seen a bait perform so well and catch so many bass.  They just SMACK it, I've been catching fish on this bait from Big Grape to the back of Gobler Creek.  The spawn is just about to wind down, but if you find a fish on a bed it is going to be a very large fish. Schooling activity is picking up everyday, the top water bite is fixing to be awesome. If the lake slicks off and the wind quits blowing,  hit the points with a Wacky Worm.  This fishing is slow and requires alot of patience, but when you get on them, you can catch 10 to 20 fish off one point. The fishing is just going to get better and better.

I am currently booking 1/2 day trips and split trips, morning and evening to avoid the heat. I do agree with Hook'em Guide Service. Please make sure if you are going to hire a guide, they are fully licensed and insured. We recommend that if you are not going to use GONE FISH'N Guide Service to call Hook'em Guide Service, he is a professional, licensed and insured guide, also Delton Womack is a professional, licensed, and insured guide.  Although we highly recommend GONE FISH'N GUIDE SERVICE.
We also want to Thank Mike and Jack with Getaway Homes for all the help they have given us and customers with accommodations.
We want to Thank Grubs for all of their help also, if you should need any accommodations for your stay at the lake we can help you with that.

Thanks to 19 yr old Steven Lowery and 16 yr old Reid Redman our trip was a blessing to me. They caught lots of fish. 16 yr old Reid caught his 1st bass ever and it was a whopping 5 lbs. as you can see in the Photos.  This was a great trip for both me and the boys we had such a good time.

May God bless you and keep you.
I'm gone fishn!

05/16/05  What a lot of people do not realize is that the spawn is not over at this lake, bcause of the depth we are continuing to see bedding fish.  Don't give up,  we have seen bedding fish in this lake in June.  The lake caught some water this weekend that might slow them down for a few days,  Capt'n Mike

05/14/05  Lots of fish still being caught, crappie are biting and there are good report on catfish being caught.  Capt'n Mike

Just wanted to brag about the crappie I caught this past weekend (Sat, May
21st).

It was about 9:00 PM Saturday evening and there was a full moon.  I caught a
17", 2 lb crappie.
I understand the lake record is 17", 2.36 lb - so I came pretty close to the
lake record.

We have fished Alan Henry for over 7 years and we really enjoy crappie
fishing.  Hopefully the crappie will continue to grow and keep biting well.

Thanks,

Largemouth Bass To Return To Lake Alan Henry

Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) Inland Fisheries Division personnel will return Budweiser ShareLunkers (largemouth bass weighing 13 pounds or more) to Lake Alan Henry on Friday, May 20.  In addition, TPWD will stock 10,000 largemouth bass fingerlings that are descended from ShareLunkers into the lake.  The Budweiser ShareLunker program uses the large females for spawning, and the resulting fingerlings are stocked into public waters to improve the quality of fishing.

Lake Alan Henry contributed nine Budweiser ShareLunkers this past season, the most of any lake in Texas. For information on the season’s entries as well as the overall program, please go to http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/fish/infish/hatchery/tffc/sharelunker.htm.

WHEN: Approximately 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 20, 2005

WHERE: Lake Alan Henry boat ramp in the Sam Wahl Recreation Area. See http://www.lakealanhenry.org/Maps.htm for directions and maps.

NOTE: Due to the distance TPWD personnel must travel (nearly 400 miles from Athens, Texas), timing is approximate. Please call Larry Hodge at (903) 681-2139 after 8:00 a.m. Friday for more definite information. This is a cell phone that may be out of range of a tower from time to time; if your call does not get through, please keep trying.

Fish are still spawning we are catching some very large fish on beds, Top water activity is increasing. We are catching lots of fish on jerk baits, anywhere from 2 to 12 lbs.  The summer time heat is kicking in and the bass fishing on Alan Henry is just as HOT.  We are boating anywhere from 20 to 40 fish a day. I'm very excited about a new bait we are using, we are throwing it until our arms feel like they are going to fall off.  It is called the RAPALA EXTREME SLASH BAIT.  We are fishing this bait as fast as we can jerk it on a non-stop retreive, and when the bass hit it they unload on it. It sure beats drowning plastic worms. Lots of times you can actually see the fish hit the bait when you stop it and it is suspended.  Another way that we are catching lots of fish at this time is on a wacky worm. Fish are also biting crank baits on the points these are post spawn fish and very aggressive. I'm starting to see some schooling activity out on the main lake, don't forget those Top Waters early in the morning and late in the evening. I believe that the fish will continure to spawn until mid June. These late spawning fish are in 12 or even 15 ft of water.

My grandson Keenan and I fished the "Little Grape" Saturday (May 7th) and saw water temps of 61 to 64 and no strikes that morning.  The afternoon brought a little more action in warmer waters of 63 to 68 degrees F. up "Gobbler Creek" about ten feet from the shoreline.   We were fishing with a white floating worm with a small brass weight, and later with white and chartreuse spinner baits.  We returned our catch to fish another day. I've noticed how clean the shore lines were this year.  Maybe the big rains washed a lot of lake debris over the spillway. We all like a clean lake.

> Mike,
> Just dropping you a note to let you know about how great a fishing day a
buddy and I had on Wed the 11th.
> We fought the 35mph winds and  wound up with 60 plus bass for the
day(largest 5 1/2) . I have just started fishing Alan Henry and love it.
Last trip two weeks ago I caught over 30 all from 2 to 4lbs.
> What a fantastic fishery!!! Love your updated lake reports!! I do wish
however they could close part of the lake off so that the gentleman could be
recovered for his family to give them some closure.

05/10/05  Lots of bass still being caught and the crappie are biting too.  Capt'n Mike

Mike I fished on Saturday and I got to tell you, The bass where on!!  Normally I catch most of my fish early in the day, but Saturday was diffrent.  We started catching bass after 12:00p.m.  Me and a budied caught well over 20 bass in less than 3 hours.  I hooked a good one and lost him about 2 feet from the net.  For guys wanting to catch alot of bass, and aren't concerned about the size try ZOOM U-Tale worms.  Seems like any color will work, but I like the junebug color.  Hope you guys catch a bunch.

Hi capt Mike,
I fished for the first time this year, and caught a whooper. The fishing was tough on Saturday, with the cold front blowing in the night before. we only caught 8 total bass, but this one made up for the slow day. I really wish i would have fished grubs tourny, maybe i would have been in the money. I caught this fish on one of my hand poured baits, and the color was white. I like to us white when the water is stained, so i can see the fish take the bait. The fish was released, and hopely I see her another day.

Since so many people look to you for updates on the lake, it may be a good time to remind people to wear their life jackets and to drive on the right side of the lake since we have so many blind corners.  I was at the lake on Friday when a oncoming pontoon boat decided to cut me off to the right instead of passing on the left.  Just as dangerous as driving on the wrong side of the highway.  I even commented to the guy with me that someone is going to get hurt unless people started driving the lake the way it should be driven.

Have you heard if they have found the body?  I was also up there Tuesday and Wednesday, and it didn’t seem like they had found anything yet, but Wednesday they did pull the Lubbock Boating Center trailer out of the water, so I was hoping for good news on the recovery.

Hello!

For all you folks who keep seeing the very very large bass in the crappie house....I caught it on tuesday morning around 1130...sorry no pics....anyway, it was a big female, my hand held scale showed just shy of 10 lbs. I caught several more large bass over 6 lbs and a whole bunch of smaller ones...the strange thing is they kept going after the crappie as I reeled them in....the crappie were just a few turns off bottom and I think the bass were suspended above them and hiding under the crappie house...I could watch them go after the crappie even after I released them....I had some larger than usual bass minnows from grubs so I just free lined them with no lead and let the minnow swim under the crappie house....and bang!!!  I have fished for years and I have never had so much fun....what a blast!!     bye the way...what is with all the dang birds, they are crapping all over everything.

04/27/05  If you are not fishing today, I am sorry.  Yesterday was good but a little over cast, some good fish caught off of beds.  This past weekend tournament was won by a 12#er,  but the tournament  to fish because it is the most fair of the season is this weekend.  It is the Grubbs Tournament,  100% pay out, you can not beat that.  There is a $2000 first place,$1000 2nd place. $600 3rd, $400 forth, $200 5th.and $100 6th, also a Jr tournament.  It is Saturday 30, of April 05, for more info call Grubbs at 806.629.4026.  The people at Grubbs should commended for such a fair tournament.  Capt'n Mike

04/22/05  Yesterday there were a lot of big bass moving up,  it should make for an interesting weekend with the big tournamnet.  Several big yellow cats were caught this week too.  Capt'n Mike

04/19/05  Here is the link to TPWD Sharelunker program.     Way to go Lake Alan Henry,  Sure a lot of big fish moving today, biggest I heard of was an 11.6 but this week should be great.  Capt'n Mike Sorry you will have to copy and paste it into your browser bar.     www.tpwd.state.tx.us/fish/infish/hatchery/tffc/entries.phtml

04/18/05  Well number 9 was caught yesterday, that is the 9th share lunker this year.  It was good week in all, and this week should be as good.   Capt'n Mike

Mike,

Just wanted to share a picture of this beauty I caught last Thursday at Lake Alan Henry.  Caught her off her bed and released her to spawn.  Also caught many fish in the 1, 2, and 3 pound range.  Hope everyone is practicing catch and release so we can keep this lake the best lake in Texas!

Mike - Thank you

Just got back last night after 3 days of what ive been waiting for all spring. A fantastic weekend of bass fishing. No big toads , but plenty of fish in the 2,3,4,5,7,8 lb class. Great time. Take care, kevin

Mike,

Be sure to tell Rick Browning “Thanks” for coming down and treating the lake like it was his own and releasing his catch.  We need a bunch of guys like that if Alan Henry is going to continue to be a great lake for big fish.

I have caught a few “big ones’ so far this year and everyone is still in the lake and growing until I see them next year.

Dear Mike,
Here is the #9 share lunker. Weighed 13.oo lbs, 27.5" long, and 20.5" girth.

Thanks,
Matt

Capt Mike, I am from Ohio and I would read your reports every day prior to
my trip to Alan Henry. I trailered a boat all the way from Ohio and was
rewarded today with an 11.90/lb bass, it was 27" long with a 18.25" girth,
bass appeard to have spawned otherwise I believe we would be looking at
another share a lunker. By the way there was a 13.00/lb bass wighed in while
I was at Grubbs caught by Matthew Jolly from Lubbock share a lunker #9, was
picked up alive tonight, congratulations Matthew.....also my fish were taken back and released to the lake.

Hey Capt,
Thought I'd send a picture of Share A Lunker #8 that my brother caught 4-14-05. It weighed 13.03. This lake is amazing............MARK

I caught this nine pounder and a five pounder from shore, Tuesday.  The big bass was on her bed in about three feet of water under a large mequite tree.  I released her back to spawn.-special thanks to some nearby fisherman who took the picture.
Can't get enough of this lake

04/12/05  Caught several nice fish this morning on beds, the water temp is up and for the most part the lake looks great.   My friend caught a 11.8 yesterday.  Go fishing it is time.  Capt'n Mike

I think the following letter has some real merit.  I wished the city of Lubbock who controls the lake would make catch and release on Bass mandantory.  If you're hangin em on your wall you should hang your head in shame and if you're eating them, try catfish or crappie, much better.  Capt'n Mike

Miike, I have spoke with you a few times over the last few years regarding catch and release. And glad to see comments being made on your site!! But, Is the any foresight in the future to make AH a catch and release only reservoir for bass? Reason being is I now how much I preach catch and release to my family , friends and others and still  some of them seem to forget It all when they catch a descent fish and are still keeping 6, 7, 9lb fish out of AH – those are just the 3 this spring that 3 people I know and 2 of them I fished with when they caught them. They keep them because they say fiberglass just aint the real thing and they think cause they keep one fish it aint going to matter. We’ll if you look at 150+- boat trailers on the ramp every sat/sun and almost that many other days of the week you can bet a few of those every day are keeping fish. There aint going to be near the quality of fish in 3,4,5 yrs compared to 2,3 years ago. I watched this happen with the stripers at Elephant Butte hear in N.M. Guides started popping up left and right, keeping 2,3,4,5 fish around the  15-40lb class, etc. Now, 4 years later your lucky to see a 20,30-40lber come out one or more times a yr.  I just wonder if it is possible to put a rule like that into affect either through the game dept, petitions or parks and rec , etc. Maybe you know or have a answer? Maybe I just need to be quiet and mind my own business, but I just hate to see a great lake with great potential go to waste. Thanks again as always for listening. Kevin

04/11/05  With the water temp still around 57* due to last weeks and Sundays cold fronts, the spawn it sure spread out.  No wonder bedding fish have been caught in June. There were some good blacks caught last week despite the wind. This week should be better with a break from the wind I hope.  The crappie showing some promise as well as catfishing.   Capt'n Mike

04/07/05  The 8th sharelunker was caught yesterday, it weighed 13.88, best lake in Texas.  Capt'n Mike

04/06/05  After yesterday with the wind blowing 50mph plus and then turning into a cold front and blowing all night, I know why there are big fish in this lake.  You can't get at em'.  Maybe we get a break tomorrow and Friday but the wind will be back on the weekend according to the weatherman.  Capt'n Mike

04/04/05   There were no sharelunkers caught this past weekend, but everyone seemed to have caught a few fish.   Everyone agreed that the spawn is about a week to 10 days from now.  Checking the Mesquites yesterday, they are coming out so that is the end of the freezing weather down there.  The water temp is just not there yet and the wind has folded the sight fishermen.   They are still not coming up to the beds in any numbers.  The crappie are biting on minnows and jigs.  Capt'n Mike

03/31/05  The seventh share lunker of 2005 was caught yesterday, by Mark Gibertini, weighed in at 13.67#, what a lake!  Also good reports on Crappie.   Capt'n Mike

I always enjoy your web site so I thought I would contribute some pics.  My 11yo son Carson caught this 9.75lb female

03/29/05  Boy is the wind howling today, cold front moving through tomorrow, maybe we will get a brake this weekend.  There are so many nooks and cranies on this lake the parking lot can be full and you will not see a boat in sight, which also makes it fishable on bad days.  The biting in 5 to 15 ft. water right now, but this cold front may send em' deeper. 03/28/05  There is an article on  www.texasfishingforum.com that says Lake Alan Henry is closed due to a dispute, that is absolutely not true, the lake is open and ready for spawn.  People will do anything to protect there fishing hole, why not let all enjoy and practice catch and release, may be our children will have a place to fish.  Capt'n Mike

03/27/05  It was sure a pretty Easter here, but the fish evidently were scared back in to hibernation.  Some action but not what we are looking for, don't get me wrong, the big ones were trying to come in or staging.  Its these damn cold fronts that mess things up.  Conmendations to Jack Anderson this is the way to do it.  Capt'n MIke

Here is a bass that I caught Weds. the 23rd.I caught it off of a point at the mouth of little Grape Creek. It weighed 9 lbs. and 14 ozs. and was 24 and 3/4 inches long. I released it back where I caught her .Measured and weighed her and going to get a replica made to put on the wall.

Mike,  I decided to take a chance and go to LAH yesterday because I wasn't sure when I could get back.  Fishing wasn't great, but it sure beats not being on the water.  Managed to catch 7 fish up to 6.7 lbs.  Some were shallow and some were 15 feet.  The highest water temp I found was 56.8, but I didn't go up the river at all.

Not 5 minutes later he got another strike and weighed it in as 7 pounds after that we fished another 5 hours with not a bite so there it is hopin you publish it+

03/25/05  Everyone who fished yesterday morning had a brake from the wind it was not as bad as expected, how ever this morning it been rather nasty.  I have to tell you this story from a friend of mine, Wednesday he was fishing [will not say where] and he see's what he thinks is a big carp or even catfish from his boat, then he realizes it is a bass.  He said that it had to be the biggest he has ever seen and he's seen some big ones, were talking in his mine the 20's.  If this lake does not produce a state record it will amaze me.  The water is clear and protected by mother nature ask anyone who fished in the wind this week.  I think the temp is going to hold em for  while but it is real close to a good start.  In the past years spawn has lasted over a month and half, because of the different water depths and temps in the lake.  You can bet when the wind is still and temp is right were going to have some fun this year.  Plastics and tubes color varys.  Capt'n Mike

03/24/05  Weatherman calls for windy today and tomorrow a cold front with winds from the northeast and rainy cold on Saturday, may be snow on Sunday but clearing late in the day.  Most everything was caught up river in merky water that is warmer than the rest of the lake.  The wind has made it hard to hold your boat on a fish.  Go hunt Easter Chickens or something not a good weekend to fish, sorry about that. Yesterday, a few up to 5# were caught but generally bad day for fishing.  Capt'n Mike

03/23/05  Well, the weatherman took the weekend away this morning, calling for windy & rainy Saturday and maybe snow on Sunday, that's West Texas folks.  That should set em' back some but not much, probably good crappie fishing though.  Everyone including myself gets in a hurry but mother nature will not be pushed.  Capt'n Mike

03/21/05  There was another lunker caught Sunday, I just got the message, will update as info comes in.  Capt'n Mike

Mike, I agee with your assesment of LAH for last week.  Fished Thursday and caught 5 up to about 4 lbs.  After talking to other boats decided that was not a bad day for the conditions.  Will try again this week.  I enjoy your website and the reports, because I can get current information before driving from Amarillo.  Thanks again.

03/20/05  The weekend was not much, as I thought the temp dropped last week and that shut em' down.  The biggest I have heard of was 6#er and slow at best.  Looks like windy today and tomorrow, with possible thunderstorms by Thursday and Friday.  That sets up the coming weekend with a full moon, mild weather all week, which should increase the temp and make the Easter weekend good fishing hopefully.

update/ Monday noon, seeing bedding fish, this should be a great weekend, if the weather holds, full moon and all.

 Capt'n Mike

03/16/05  Its been cold the last couple of nights but warming way up today, maybe the temp will come back up to 59* like last weekend.  Please keep me informed on the temp.  There were some excellent keeper crappie caught during the cold spell, but not much bass action, maybe this weekend.  Capt'n Mike

Just wanted to express my agreement with catch and release. I only started going to Alan Henry last year, and I must say it's one of the best lakes I've ever been on. I hope it continues to be. If everyone can be happy with a simple photo for bragging rights, it will. I'm making my first trip this season on sunday, hope the weather cooperates. Good luck to everyone, and KEEP RELEASING!

I just wanted to say thanks for posting your letter about catch and release. I also wanted to tell everyone who is thinking about keeping a fish that you can get a replica made for just as cheap. Lake Fork taxidermy does a great job of making replicas that will look just like your fish! All you need is some good pictures, and the weight and girth of your fish. We need evreyones help to keep this lake the BEST IN TEXAS!!! Thanks for your help.

03/15/05  Its definitely getting there, the first bloody females are being caught, the weather is the ticket now.   Remember this is Spawn and if you want to keep the lake as good as it is or better practice catch and release, it will make a difference and tell anyone who is considering taking it home take a picture and set the bass free you will be proud of youself and if you send it to me you will have nationwide bragging rights and that's alot cheaper than a mount.  Hell go on out and buy yourself a nice digital camera and have more fun than any mount or meal could give you.  There are 2 good letters concerning catch and release in the following.  Capt'n Mike

Fishing report 3-13-05
water temp 59 *  clear                            Its time to go fishing  !!!!!!!!

The bass & the crappie have come to life. This year the bass are big. There is no doubt in my mind the lake record will be shattered..Bass are hitting anything you throw at them. I did 6 trips this week and 5 days my clients had 20 lb. stringers !!.. I still cant believe it... check out all the photos...and the dates on my dig camera.
I am J.R. Ortiz..a licensed, fully insured fishing guide .
35 years fishing experience. I am not out there to be the best angler in the world or catch the biggest bass. My job is to teach my clients how to fish .
Look thru the archives in this great webpage and my personal webpage ; and you will see lots of pictures of my clients with fish --they caught---.
When you fish with me all you have to do is get on the boat. The lures are tied on and the cooler is full of snacks..drinks..lunch. I take you right to the spots and explain why the fish are there and show you how to see the structure and cover on the electronics. You can learn more in 1 or 2 days than years just trying to figure it out. You can stand right beside me and I will explain every detail in putting that bait in the right place...watching and feeling for the subtle bites of a bass and landing it.
I will always give an honest report of what is going on at the lake when you call. I am 80 % booked already .reserve your trip before the last good days are taken.
Thank You            &             Watch That Line !

Hey Capt'n Mike,

With all the lake pressure this spring and some big hogs being caught, please post a message about catch and release.   I shouldn't have to explain the reasoning behind catch and release, but the picture of the guy from Andrews in front of his house with a 9 pounder makes me wonder how many other big fish are being caught and then taken home for the family to see.

Keep up the good work with the web site.

Eric

Mike,

I was at LAH on Friday, March 11th for some spectacular evening fishing.  We motored around in the boat, and you are correct, even if the fishing gets terrible, the scenery itself is enough to take one’s breath away.  Just as the sun was about to go down, we turned into a cove just outside Gobbler and I nailed a 5lb large mouth with a hard bait lure.  It was an honor to land one of God’s beautiful creatures, rub its belly, wish it well, and RELEASE it back into the clear waters of the Lake.  We are truly blessed to have such a wonderful lake so close.

Thanks for the work you do on this site, as it serves the fishing community well.

PLEASE MAKE THE WIND STOP.

Fised from sun up to 2:30 today.  We boated a total of 9 fish today.  Bite was better before the wind decided to be unforgiving.  I caught 2 fish today.  3-3 1/2 # each.  My buddie caught the other 7, that is what kept us out so long.  Props to AZ for a good day on the water.

Water temp early was 53 and later in the day it was 57.

Randy

03/07/05  Jigs seem to be the ticket, water temp has been up and down off of 54*.  Several reports of good catches this past weekend up to 10#.  I predict someone is going to catch a lake record in the next 45 days how's that.  Capt'n Mike

Well, I ended my last report with these words "Dreaming of my future LAH sharelunker." Who would have thought that dream would become a reality so soon. I knew after my state championship ring blew into the lake last year that this lake would repay me somehow. Last night I caught a 4 pound bass and gave him to some guys that needed fish for the science center in Lubbock. I was pleased but had no idea what was about to happen next. A fish, maybe the same one, got a hold of one of my minnows and even with the drag set, snapped one of my newer Shimano rods in half. I was furious because that was the second time in the last week I lost something huge out of the crappie house. I then put 20 lb test spider wire on my best pole with a big ole hook and the biggest minnow in the bucket. About 5 minu
